I am having a possible clutch problem with a 1983 944. After a short (normal) drive 2 days ago, after starting again it was difficult or impossible to engage any gear with the engine running. I can engage any gear with the engine off, then start the car, and it seemed OK except that shifting was still difficult and no way to engage reverse without grinding. No obvious noises while running from clutch or transaxle, clutch engages at the normal point in the pedal travel but the clutch is obviously not disengaging fully. Slave cylinder is new (3 months), pedal free play is nominal, pedal travel seems normal with good resistance throughout, and the release fork travel is just at the low end of the spec range. The previous owner had NO records, so I do not know the miles on this clutch or if it is a rubber or spring center.
Has anyone out there had a similar problem or any guess as to the cause. I assume it is going to have to come out. Thanks for the advice. |

it might be the throw out bearing or the rubber center on your clutch disc. Time to get a new clutch man. Go for a Sachs Powerclutch or a Centerforce carbo kevlar.

Don't replace that clutch($$$$$$) until you check out the clutch master cylinder.
I had almost the exact same problem, so i replaced the slave cylinder too, because it was leaking fluid. Less than a month later the master cyl. went on me, causing the same problem to re-appear. I've heard quite a few people say that their master cyl went a couple of weeks after replacing the slave, and vice-versa. Mike |
