It seems to me that wherever i go on the internet, porsceh owners with diferent model numbers seem to hate or feel better than the other.
So I have a 931 (924 turbo), that I have tried, and it has serious engine trouble, and i have learned a lot about 924s and come to realize that if I do buy a porsche it will not be my next one, no more 924 or 924 turbo probably. Now I was thinking about going into a notehr model number, wether it be 928 944 951 911 930 etc. But from what I have seen, people that don't own 924s think that porsche made the 924 a schitcar, people that own 944s seem to think all other porsches are schit cars, but have some compassion for the 944 and 928, people that own a 911 seem to think that all other porsches made do not exist/were made as schit cars...etc. Now why would you buy a porsche if the company makes one good car and all teh others schit cars? What kind of company is that? Now I am wondering, should i even bother with porsche? is it not the car that is the problem, but the people who own them with status problems? Usually when i have been on other car boards, such as let's say a ferrari board or a volvo board, or a Triumph board, they seem to all like the car name in general, not jsut their own model number. Its as if a 944 is made buy Porsche1, and a 911 is made by Porsche2, and porsche1 is a completely different factory than porsche2. I have seen ferrari owners around here, guys have a testarossa, and a 328 and they don't really race each other to see who is better, they more get together and say wow thats a nice ferrari. Porsche owners however, they seem to be out driving looking for other porsche models to target. Mr.Boxster races a 944 and gives him the finger. There goes two completely different cars, but no, wait, those are both porsches, so WTF i ask? One guy LIKES his car more than the other in Porsche talk i have found. "i really like the *** model porsche better than the *** model, I'm sorry but i just hate your car, and i also hate you, so F**k off until you get a porsche of my model. Why does it seem to me that more car owners who are like this own Porsches than other cars? Even those rice hondas, you don't see CRX owners yelling at Accord owners do you? no you see them yelling at neons and toyata mr2s, but thats natural, i think porsche owners should be yelling at BMW owners at least please if you are going to yell! (i'm not agreeing with yelling, but hey! do it to someone who isn't in your family if you have to do it?!) So like, what should i do? why would i buy another porsche if all these porsche owners seem to have this attitude? Now there are porsceh owners out there who ARE cool, like guys in 911s who drive buy and wave and talk to a 924 owner, or guys who own and enjoy both models, but there are MANY who are not like this. What is up? what is it about just Porsche owners in general that seem to be like this more than any other car make? |

So, I think you know what you really want to get. If you owned any Porsche you know what it is all about. You can't do any better than any Porsche. I'm done rambling. ------------------ Porsche, Through and through Tim '83 944 http://community.webshots.com/user/strayer15 |

Isn't part of owning a car about the people who own it, the freinds, the car buddies, otherwise you would be just sitting in your garage loving your porsche like a human the rest of your life and giving it kisses? |

They are out there, but we are few and far between. I'm one of them, you just have to look. I am still looking....

I agree 100% too. I like all Porsche's the same no matter what model # is. It's about the cars and the people who enjoy the cars not the people who judge their model against another.

There are lots of diffrent owners. The 924 due to it's VW/Audi history seems to get dumped on alot I must admit as did the 914 people too for the same reason.. now that people have built killer 914's they seem to be getting some respect. I don't know much about the 924 other than that's what the 944 is based on. I think that the two big camps are the 911 vs the world people. I'm in the world catagory I think your going to see more grass level ie here support for the water coolers 924-928-944 due to the bang for the buck that you just can't get from a 911. So lets stick togher and about buying another car get what you like what feels right to you thats all that matters.

I love how Porsche owners crap on anything that has VW/Audi history. They are part of the great heritage of the Porsche. Does everyone forget the great Auto Union of Germany and how it forged the way for all three of these great brands!?
I own an Audi and a Porsche....believe me the Porsche is way more of a pain in my ass than the Audi ever will be. Just my 2 cents. -G ------------------ Geoff Baltz '86 944 Turbo http://www.ninefiveone.com [This message has been edited by geoffbaltz (edited 06-17-2001).] |

There shouldn't be any rivalry as far as I am concerned. Like Stray said, the cars are built to compete in a class. A 944 isn't built to take a 911 twin turbo. As far as the guys on the 911 board getting angry, they are prolly not the best examples anyway (Especially that planter guy!!
) Most of them own raggedy 911s to begin with.

i think some of em have family troubles or insecurity. I just don't know why it tends to be the snobbies that are on the net? Maybe they are supposed to be eating supper with their wife or doing a chore, but instead they sit on their computer and rage out!

one thing many people confuse are Porsche owners and Porsche enthusiasts.
a Porsche owner is a person who owns a Porsche. they don't know **** about the car, the company, or the history of anything connected to Porsche. a Porsche enthusiast is a person that is enthusiastic about Porsche cars. they love everything from the 356 to the 996GT2 and inbetween. people who ignore the Porsche connection to Audi or Volkswagen are NOT Porsche enthusiasts, they are Porsche owners. i just spent 3 days doing Tech Inspection for the Club Race at Watkins Glen. those were a bug bunch of Porsche enthusiasts. everyone gets respect for their car, their choice of cars, and the love of Porsche. i have MUCH more respect for a guy that owns a beat up modified Honda and BEATS ALL BUT TWO PORSCHE OWNERS AT A PORSCHE-INVITATIoNAL AUTOCROSS IN CALIFORNIA. (some of you may know who this is too). i don't have any bit of respect for a guy that buys a 911 turbo, thinks he's the world's best driver (because somehow because you own a 911 that means that you all of a sudden possess the world's greatest drivign skill) and gets his ass handed to him by a guy in a beat up Honda. the only thing that peeves me are people who are ignorant of what Porsche is. not only do they give certain Porsches a bad rep, but somehow they give all of us Porsche enthusiasts a bad name. they do us all a major disservice when they talk to people on the outside world and people think they are representative of all Porsche owners or ethusiasts. obin |

I don't think the 924 gets half the respect it should...That is probably true for all the early water cooled models...Personally I love the 924...It's the essence of Porsche...It is fun to drive, handles like a dream, and is easy to work on...Did I mention it is FUN to drive...What else does a person want in a car...First there was the 924...then the 928...then the beloved 944...951...and so on...

You're missing the point here Mike. The point is that the 911 is air-cooled amd because of that is FAR superior. HAH!! lol. The 911 guys are all driving old ass 911s and talking like they are the ****. It's kind of funny. "I have a 944 and a 911, my son drives the 944 nuff said" right........I just don't get it, like you AMC.

mike i don't think there is a problem with the 924 not being respected because 99 percent of 924s are broken and are hopeless in restoring without spending 5 times teh amount you paid for the car (you could have just got a 951).
Been there done that...parting out mine and have already earned more than what i paid for the car. |

AMC, I understand your problem, but don't forego getting a Porsche just because somebody you don't even know won't respect your car. Besides, there are actually more "Porsche enthusiasts" out there than just "Porsche owners". There are a lot of 911 owners out there that respect 924's. There are a lot of 356 owners out there that respect 928's. There are a lot of 993 owners out there that respect 996's. There are a lot of 944 owners out there that respect 914's. There are a lot of 968 owners out there that respect 986's. You just got to know where to find them!

Porsche owners are like any other group...there are "good ones and bad ones". Obin has a good point about Owners vs. Enthusiasts. But even within each of those categories there are good and bad. I've met enthusiasts who are complete ass clowns, and nearly oblivious owners who were great people...and they were interested in knowing more about their cars after talking for a while.
As for the inter-model hostility, oh well. I think it is at least partly based on ignorance. I think the people that love one model and truly dislike another have not spent enought time in the other. I own a '91 c4 cab. The 911 had always been my dream car, and I didn't think much of 944s. Until I was lucky enough to get a 951. Now I am in love with both! I drove to work today in the 911 with the top down. It is a gorgeous sunny day and i cant get the grin off my face. I also can't wait to get the fo-fo out on the track (the 944 will eat the 911 alive on the track by the way!) It doesn't look likely any time soon (my cars are busy trying to break my financial back), but I want another one! Enjoy yours, whatever it is! They just don't realize what they are missing. What a load of crap! AMC all you really want is to start a flame war! Anyone here can read what you wrote on the 911 board. Is there anyone here who has owned other cars such as Ford, Chevy, etc., that hasn't heard the same "my car is better than yours?" To that I reply, who cares? I like most every car. What I really think is that AMC has no friends and just likes to stir things up. If so, have at it. Kurt V 72 911E |
