is there more than one way to check transaxle fluid?
I CANNOT remove the fluid check plug on my 87 944S trans.
Not with the 17mm hex socket, not with it loaded up with liquid wrench, not with it up on the hoist, not with a little oversized bolt lightly hammered into the plug (because the corner where rounded from previous owner) and two pairs of visegrips on the bolt. Is there ANY other way (aside from removing it) to check the fluid. I want to be certain is has enough fluid. Thanks, Dean |
Dean, you have a classic problem.
You may want to try a torch on it to get some differential expansion going to break the hangup. but with the rounded corners, you may need to take a more drastic action. I would take it to a shop (if you can't weld) and have a stud welded onto the plug. That heat will take care of all the rust and give you a fine spot to to slap a socket onto. Try a 2 foot breaker-bar. If you can get something in the plug, connect the breaker-bar at an angle while the car is jacked up. Once you've got the breaker-bar positioned, let the jack down and the weight of the car on the breaker bar will break the bolt loose. Good luck,
