Rear hatch window separation?
 

Last night, my boy was telling me he could hear the rear hatch glass rattling a little at the top (passenger side near roof). After we got home, I looked a little and it appears the glass is separating a little as if the seal has broken?

These gremlins won't leave me alone, man..... What is the answer here. I hope not an expensive or difficult one?

That is a famous problem that occurs with the majority of '44 owners..

Think the majority have the hatch glass seperating from the frame at the top. Some know it; some don't.

Things to check:

Are the hinge pins free to rotate? Not rusted?

Do the latches line up? The pins hit the center of the catches? Or do the pins hit the side of the holes in the body?

I fixed my first hatch by scraping out the loose sealent, squirting the 3M stuff into the gap and proping the hatch open for 24 hours until the 3M stuff set up. By proping open I had to use a two by four at the back to force the glass into the metal frame. If you stand at the back of the car and force the end of the hatch "over center" you will see the glass move back into the frame.

This fix worked till I found a hatch off of an 86.

I did what SoCal did, then had some more seperation a year later on the passenger side this time, so I took the hatch off and broke it down, cleaned the steel track and resealed the entire thing.

It took me two days to scrape all of the old sealent out of the frame. Then I found out that the local glass installers would have done it for $200.

eh, 200 saved is 200 earned.

This is best idea I have came up with on the various 944s that I've worked on..

Most people advise you to take the hatch off and re-set the window into place and have it tack hammered. That was just too much work for me, SO..

What your trying to solve it water leaks and air noise.

Get a roll of electrical tape, and lay it in the middle of the hatch and the metal frame. Heat it up with a hair dryer to get a good stick to the surface, and then use a razor blade to contour the edges of the tape.

Not only is this completely unnoticeable but it also solves your problem.

Ya, I've had electrical tape on there for about 6 months now..
It holds pretty well, and can barely be seen.
But it's only a temp. thing until I get it resealed...
