951 4 wheel drive

Has anyone ever done it?
could a new 911's system be used?
What's a ball park estimate on cost?

If you want to go off-roading, the wheelbase isn't that far off of a Jeep Wrangler. Mount a 944 body on a Jeep frame and be the laughing stock of both Porsche and Jeep bullitin boards.

Porsche Crest

With the 911's engine being in the back and ours in the front, I doubt a front drive-train would fit, plus how would you get power to it?

hehe...maybe ask a person at the Porsche dealer and see the look on their face. Then again, they will likely try and talk you into a Cayenne.

Closest alternative I can think of would be to buy an Audi Coupe quattro and turbo it.

That will probably end in "Okay, you're wondering about putting 911 stuff in a 944? Yes...and who makes the 944?"

Yes, on the 944 or similar type platform the AWD will probably do little more than add the weight and understeer like others have mentioned. But I'm curious. On a 911 platform, isn't the Carrera 4 quicker around the racetrack than a Carrera? I'm guessing the RWD, Rear engine platform is more neutral and controllable with the AWD system. But then again, the GT2 and GT3 are RWD in the interest of weight savings. I'm confused when it comes to the 911!

On the other hand, given the choice between FWD and AWD (like on Audis and newer Volvos), I'll take AWD in a hearbeat.

Again, I must agree with that!

While AWD may get you around a track quicker, IMHO, it's not as fun, since typically, slip angles are not as drastic as RWD cars.
