easy upgrades

i was reading about "things to get more power out of your 944" at 9xauto.com, and i was wondering if i should do these things:

new injectors
new oxygen sensor
new fuel filter
new ignition coil and plug wires
delete my CAT (i plan on anyway)
FRWilk's chip

with all these things, would there be much of a difference?
how much would all these things cost me?
what brands are better?

If you get Wilk's chip, don't bother with the O2 sensor, it doesn't use it.

Don't delete the CAT either, loss of backpressure on the 2.5NA engine is more of a performance hit, than a benefit.

anyone agree with Scott that removing the CAT is not a benefit?
(while keeping the muffler)

Nothing in your list will help unless something has a problem. Deleting the cat would lose torque, might gain hp, but lose 3 tq, gain 3hp, whats the point? FRWilk chip = cool as shiz :P Thats worth it, helps with sub-4k rpm power, a bunch.

Now you talk about catīs....what is the performance of 944 who already donīt have the CAT? Do i have less torque? Or is it factory compensated when itīs factory installed?

I lost the CAT on my 85.5, it broke down into chunks, so I dumped it out and bolted the hollow CAT back in. I did loose a noticeable amount of low end power.

I would say unless FR's chip can nullify this effect, it would be a loss.

No cat, no backpressure , drop in low end power (like we need that!)

Like your list but reverse the order and drop the cat and o2 sensor.

Your injectors can probably just be cleaned / tuned about $50.

You can't throw money at these cars and expect lots of improvement, have you fixed all the drivability and ground issues.
When these cars are running as intended they are pretty damn good.

Actually I just read your post about your cracked intake hose (alien tube)...Pelican has em

You should really wait on modding until you get all this other stuff working right. Yeh some of these bits seem to cost alot and aren't nearly as satisfying as "new performance this or that.... but they add up to making the machine work right.

I am not sure about the cat, people say that you would lose too much back pressure, but how much do you need? The muffler already provides much more back pressure than the cat. I would like to see someone actually test this. If having a cat were 'better' for the car, they would have added one to the european cars.

Ignition wires/coil/fuel filter - If you do not know when these were last replaced, go ahead and do it. They are all pretty easy jobs and are not all that expensive.

Injectors - You can just send them out and get them cleaned. It would be a lot cheaper than buying new ones. New ones are about 73 dollars a peice.

FRWilk's Chip - Heard nothing but good reviews. If I had money I would buy one.

yea ROW 944 makes about 10 or 20 hp more (depending who you ask) without a cat. is the euro exhaust set up different to compensate for that different back pressure?
ds475: the stuff you described is basically a tune up (other than the chip). it wont give you a real noticible power boost but its all a good idea if youve got the cash and you have reason to think they need tuned

A good way to get power:

Dont forget the golden rule:-

1> reduce the weight more pickup.

So remove the engine, install a industrial strength elastic band.

the car will be lighter, so it can go faster. You wont need a petrol tank cos elastic bands dont need them. so even lighter. No petrol, save on money, just wind up the band every so often.

of course even better, knock out the floor and do it flintstones stylee, will make you fit as well.

hell ! get rid of the car and buy a bike !

so, removal of cat is only beneficial if you have euro exhaust?

Removing the cat is a waste on the NA. I removed my cat and kept the stock exhaust and didn't notice a difference at all.

Then I bought the Bursch exhaust for only $300 and fitted the stock cat back in place. I saw a gain here....especially at high altitude!

The Bursch exhaust is nice bcz it sounds the same, gives you some performance (not much, but it helps), and doesn't look like I fit a Foldgers Coffee Can to my muffler!!!
