Temp Gauge Reading?
 

My 83 944 temperature gauge needle always runs up to the middle of the gauge, (second bar of the three bars in the middle of the gauge).

Is this normal or should the temperature be lower? When the gauge begins to move past the second bar to the third bar, the cooling fans come on then go off when the gauge is between the first and second bar.

Should I replace the thermostat with a 160-degree thermostat?

I am also running just water in the cooling system. Trying to get out the entire oil residue caused by failed oil cooler seals.

Sounds normal. Start to worry when the fans don't come on. You can't bleed the system enough.

The temp gauge on early 944 models is only a guide, accuracy seems to have been of secondary importance. As long as the fans cycle correctly, there is no coolant loss, and the radiator is warm over the complete surface I wouldn't worry. To check, use a temp gun and measure the engine at various points.
The oil residue can be removed by using a water soluble detergent in the cooling system; this will remove most of it. Flush a couple of times and then refill and bleed the system. Always use the proper antifreeze mix.

Thanks for the responses. I have been running water and some detergent in the cooling system to remove all traces of oil. Most if it has been removed, but before I winterize the car I wanted to know if the thermostat should be replace.

The fan switch was replaced in the spring along with a host of other items including the belts.

I do all my own work in the car and I have been able to bring it back to life from a non-running 944 to one that is fun to drive.

Some new tires, repack the CV joints and an alignment will be the next items on the list before the winter sets in.

I have been doing roughly the same thing as you on my 83....

I do tend to obsess on my temp guage a bit.

Yours sounds really good considering you are only running water. Once you have the right mix in it should be right on.

I wish I had a warning light that came on at the 3/4 mark so I can stop looking at that damn guage!

just water makes the temp run higher than an anti-freeze water mix.
