Tomorrow, Grommit and I will be racing (autocrossing) my 951 at El Toro Air Force base in Tustin. Anybody from the area is encouraged to come with any sort of vehicle and join us. Usually these events draw a lot of people and cars (100+), including a few other 944s.
Hopefully we'll keep the car together at 17 lbs of boost. Looks like we may run in the Street Modified Class against some modified RX-7 tts, Supras tts and the like. Tech starts at 7:15 am. Hope to see you there. Erick ![]() |

i wonder how those wheels would look if you painted them the same color as your car....ugly?? the chrome is just too bright for my eyes

at the autocrosses i've been to, power wasn't the biggest factor (by far), so don't worry about not being able to boost to 17 lbs or 14 lbs or even 10 lbs. not a big deal.
it's all how your suspension is setup, tires, and the driver. also, the smaller cars tend to do better because of their lighter weight & manueverability, so don't be bummed if you are beaten by miatas or mr2s. in fact, unless you're a good driver or they are inexperienced, those types should beat you. at the track, it's a different game altogether. have fun, bring a lawn chair, plenty of water & a big hat. is grommit driving his 951 beater? ![]() |

They're polished wheels, not chrome - god help me if I put chrome wheels on my car.
Thanks for the input Blackfoot - the suspension is indeed the most important part. My 944S was pretty darn competive with the exact same front suspension (275# and koni yellows) and front and rear welts. I was usually two or three seconds off the fast S2000s that were running gumballs. The 924S with just the yellows and front welt was also pretty competitive suprisingly, although the Miatas in CSP are pretty damn fast. The 951 has the rear torsion bars (28mm) also which should help. The main problem I forsee is the lack of limited slip. I'm going to try to make up for that in straight line speed. Erick |

In a word - it sucked! Seriously though we had a good time, but the racing itself was pretty miserable.
Bottom line is that I had a tough time controlling the car. Even though we had a better power/weight than just about every other car, I had a tough time getting it to the pavement. The turbo lag was a little more than I anticipated also. I might try some heavier front springs (400lb) also to see if that helps the car smooth out. With the 275's the front was still ducking a lot under braking. Otherwise, we had a good time and saw some really wicked cars such as a naitonal champion Lotus Elite (DM) and Mazda Miata (CSP). I was pretty much lighting the tires up from start to finish. Otherwise, the car ran excellent with the temp gauge staying at 1/4 the entire time, even in the heat. Thanks for the input guys. Erick |

Do you have a limited slip diff in that thing?
PS: While the front springs will cancel some of the oversteer, they won't make a huge difference in throttle oversteer, a rear sway bar can also help your situation. Even if you have a factory limited slip (and if you don't, they make ALL the difference, believe me), a high quality aftermarket unit, like a Torsen would also provide HUGE benefits.
