Post Quick help needed with starting car (not 944)

Ok fellas..

i got a problem with a buddy of mines car. its a 1956 Chevy 210 Wagon (bel air) and here the story goes.

FIRST: his speedometer was broken so we disconnected the old one, and put a new one in. STILL didnt work. the gauges for temp and gas also dont work..

by the time we got done, we tried to start the car and it wouldnt turn over.

we have power at the coil and the interior lights go on, but the car wont make ANY attempt to turn over.

it has been redone with a V8 motor.

PLEASE help me with any tips on how to fix the speedometer. BUT, more importantly, how to get her to start.

im gettin the feeling that the speedometer has nothing to do with it not starting and it might be a coincedence.

thanks,
SHAUN

Hi Shaun try looking at the starter switch, maybe a wire fell off. if looks good try removing and replacing the wires on the battery as the terminals might be bad anf finally try jumping with a set of cables also do the jump the solenoid deal......Stan

The wire bundle that goes to the starter and solenoid passes between the right exhaust manifold and the engine block. It is prone to shorting out, burn-thru or becoming charded. Thoroughly check those three wires.

i got it guys.. it IS the neutral safety switch.. i still dont know how to fix it though. every time i change gears and want to start it again, i have to tap the steering column with a screw driver.

and i still dont know what to do with the speedo and gauges.
