The blower cover with the flap door over by the battery

On my 85.0 944 i took that big cover in between the battery and the windshield wiper motor off to get to the blower motor. That main outer cover is falling apart, and i would probably need to get a new one if i were to put it back on. my question is, is that cover a necesity? i noticed a radiator underneath the battery tray that this cover used to seal over. does that matter if water get down on that radiator? (because i don't want to put that big cover back on) in the haynes manual it only shows the smaller cover over the blower motor that is concealed by the larger cover.

That "radiator" is the heater core. The cover is there to keep large chunks of trash (like leaves and such) and rain water out of the blower motor and heater core.

actually, it rained today, and that smaller shroud over the blower motor kept the blower motor dry. will water hurt/affect the heater core?

The cover you are talking about, does it look like this?
