Under car filth!

I was looking at my tranny and those fins on the bottom side of my engine, and i was disgusted! that 1/8" layer of poo on the bottom side of my car is a disgrace and i want to get rid of it.

what should i use? power washer? gasoline?

engine degreaser, Wal-mart, $.79 per can - get 5 or 6 cans. Spray and scrub and spray some more, rinse as necessary

Gunk Engine Brite. Spray on, work in with a brush, rinse with strong spray from a garden hose or pressuer washer. Repeat as necessary.

Be careful with a pressure washer down there. You don't want to get water where it don't belong.

I used the stuff called "Purple Power" and a scrub brush then rinsed with water. Do Not Pressure wash as water will get into everywhere you don't want it.

On my tranny I scraped off the Poo with a popsicle stick then used a toothbrush and kerosene and scrubbed until there was a nice shinny tranny. The kerosene cuts through grease and grime easily. Wear gloves and goggles to protect yourself and don't get any on your paint.

do those engine degreasers in the cans work as well as kerosene/gasoline? a gallon of gas is a lot cheaper than a gallon of that engine degreaser.

Using gas is a Bozo No-No. Too flamable.

Engine Brite and the like are safer and contain emulisifiers, so you can just spray on and hose off.

If you use a straight petroleum product like gas or kerosene as a cleaner, you have to use a detergent (soap) to remove the "cleaner".

I got a gallon of "purple power" from pep boys. I put it in a spray bottle and just sprayed away. I seems to work pretty well for me. I think that it was like 4 or 5 dollars, maybe less

I have so much crap on the trans. I think it may be undercoating....underneath is nice clean metal

What's the best way to tell the difference?

Be careful with the purple power, it is a strong alkalai. It tends to age rubber and dry things out a bit much. Between the power steering fliud making everything swell and the alkalai drying and shrinking things, pick up some suspension bushings, you'll need them.

The engine bright is much easier on all the other things you don't want ravaged.

one thing y'all forgot is to mention how you get under the car. do most of you use jackstands? ramps? fortunate enough to have access to a lift? I've been using jackstands so far, but soon I hope to have access to a lift to "do it right"

yep, but it's soo much easier to do a good job when you can stand under the car

BTW: forgot to mention that my degreaser of choice is Castrol Superclean. works great, just remember to rinse like a mofo

I went to the local self serve car wash. I didnt want all the crud in the parking lot. Then I used The purple power and a pump sprayer to apply the degreaser. Then I used the sprayer to clean the underside. It worked great.
