AutoX this weekend and a wrecked EVO

I particiapated in a local "Halloween" theme AutoX this weekend, in which I did terribly with the RS. But not as bad as this new comer in a "Lancer EVO." If you have not seen one of these it's a little 4 door thing with painted red calipers. Looks like a cross between an 90's Nissan Sentra, and a Hyundai Excel.

Anyway, this driver told the instructors that this was not his first time out, but a few of us think it was. He got carried away, went into a corner WAY too fast and flipped his brand new car over! (He also killed about 7 innocent cones in the process) It still had temporary plates on it! The wrecker was able to roll it back over, but it would not start and had to get towed away.

Anyway after that everyones times were down.

Actually yes I do, not of the wreck but of the AutoX. I can post when I get home and hook my camera up. If you have ever been present at a trackside wreck, then you probably know that your not thinking about snapping photos.

My PCA region (NNJR) offers a Car control clinic every year that includes a slalom excerise, braking excersise, and a skid-pad section. It really helps get newbies on track with autocross. (pun intended!)

All clubs that do autocrossing should have some type of clinic or school that helps people understand how handling dynamics work. Scott: perhaps you need to help organize this in your region...

-Z-man.

PS: I am glad to hear the driver's Ok.

I am sure the EVO owner's insurance company is going to LOVE his excuse for flipping his car. Hopefully they won't sue the SCCA. The SCCA has already had some big hits this year.

If the guy signed the waiver that most autocross events require you to sign, there's no way the SCCA can be sued for this. The fact that the owner's remarks about NOT being a newbie are questionable will also show that the folks running the event mae every effort to ensure the safety of the EVO and it's driver.

Just tossing in my $0.42,
-Z.

There is a video on the net somewhere showing an Evo flipping over on a track course.... In the video it drifts around every corner .... its actually a pretty good video. Lots of nice cars on the track with it....

On a side note... have you guys ever seen a 944/951 flip on a track?

I usually don't pay attention to the type cars going around the course, (mostly watching the technique of the driver) but it did seem that the EVO was not the *best* in the corners. I think it's based on a 4 door economey car platform from the looks of it.

Maybe it's better in the 1/4 then on the curves, it looked like a 944 with small sway bars when it was running. Kinda that front end squat and the ass end going high thing.

A buddy has a new Evo. While parked side by side at the gas station I noitced his car was almost a foot taller then mine. The thing is huge. I have ridden in it a couple of times and must admit it is pretty quick. It is also sprung pretty hard and wondered to myself obout the likelyhood of the car tipping in a corner. We were driving on our favorite back roads and he was behind me. The road we were on was nothing but turns. We never had the wheel straight. anyways after the second turn they lost track of me. Yes I was still in front. I was surprized how he couldn't keep up with me. I though it would of been like a leisier strole in the park for him. He even has 300hp! (modified) This is why I respect the 944 so much. It is not the fastest but in my opionion one of the most balanced. (acceleration, handeling, braking)

Has he put anything into the suspension at all? I wonder if a few small upgrades would help....

This was a complaint that I brought up at the last drivers meeting. The local PCA offers some pretty good instruction, but for instance the Miata club does not at all. I wonder if the SCCA should mandate some basic training for these events. If I felt I was even 1/10th as good as some of the senior drivers I would do this. Maybe I can get some of the vetrans to offer up some time.

No suspension upgrades yet, just motor upgrades.

I also think as soon as the turbo was making power in his Evo he had to get on the brakes for the next turn, where as my punny 150 hp 44 had instant power when i summoned it alowing me to get to the corner a little sooner.

Here's a hypethetical: Do you think it is possible to flip a 944 at an auto-x (granted that you stay on the course)?

Here's me and the '44 auto-xing. Damn, I wish I was running fuchs all around in this pic.

Ya. turbo 270 hp all wheel drive. Pretty fun car along with the WRX STI which is 300 hp all wheel drive. On buddy has the Evo and the other has a WRX STI. Both cars launch real hard. It reminds me of riding motorcycles. By the way both cars ar moded from stock and putting out about 60 hp more than stock. Fun Fun Fun

Why did they make it a 4 door? With it's mods they should have at least taken out the car seat tie downs in the rear, and offered a coupe version, Mitsubishi is soo weird.

But I do love my Mitsubishi big screen, excellent T.V.!

This way the mustang, camaro, and vette owners can go home whining they got smoked by a 4 door econo box. I wish they made the WRX STI in the station wagon! Then the mustang owners would be crying " Man I just got smoked by some lady in a 4 door station wagon!" That lady being my wife!
