noisy valve lifter or belt roller?

After trying to adjust an erradic idle i stumbled across a loud noise in the engine. It sounded like a worn out belt roller but its near the top of the cam box. Now I had the tensioners replaced in the car about 12,000 miles ago and they couldn't have gone bad already. Perhaps maybe I need a timing belt retension or is this something different...

Could this be a noisy valve, lifter, or a worn lobe on the camshaft????? need feedback please.... I'm goin through the Haynes manual and what they are saying.

Eurospec

I had a bad noise like you describe, and it was the cam belt tensioner broken up, there were no balls left in the ball race part of the tensioner, I was miles from home but I got a new tensioner and changed it roadside.

Used up aboutb three lives that day!

Cool

I had this same sound in the same place. I thought the sound was coming from the Disturbtor cap so I open it and put it back and the sound was gone. Try that.

You didn't mention what type of noise. If it's a "roaring" type of noise, that is usually a rotating part with a bad bearing or something rubbing. If it has a rythmic "beat" or tapping to it, suspect a reciprocating part like a lifter. Worn cam lobes are fairly rare. These hold true most of the time and will help find a logical starting place to look.

I thought I had a bad lifter, it turned out to be a broken exhaust stud on #4 near the firewall and as a result, the exhaust flange wasn't evenly torqued. This allowed a bit of exhaust blowby, mimicking a bad lifter. Before getting crazy disassembling, look closely for that kind of easy stuff. Also, spend the $10 for a mechanic's stethoscope. It will pay for itself in time saved very quickly.

Good luck
