Replacing stereo, need help
I searched all the archives, but haven't found the answer I'm looking for. So here it goes: I pulled out this crappy cassette player, along with a BIG wad of electrical tape (I knew I was in trouble) so I unwrapped it, sorted out the wires and this is what I came up with: all four speaker wires:good- brown wire:ground- red/yellow stripe:+12v ignition- white wire:electric ant. Now here comes the trouble. the previous owner ran a wire to the fuse box for steady +12v which he ran to the stereo, but he also spliced a red/blue stripe to this wire. I tested everything with a voltmeter. With more testing, I found that this red/blue wire has something to do with dome lights, clock, cigarette lighter which only work with the key in the ignition, not the first notch, just in the ignition. correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the dome lights, clock, cigarette lighter suppose to have a steady +12v to them? Any help please would be appreciated, Thanks for your time.

OK here I go. The picture is not the best. The Red/Blue wire goes to the Ignition Starter. The other end goes to the Radio Relay Pos. Side of the the coil.
The relay's contact... Red - Constant Voltage to Cig. Lighter Red/White - Tied to Red comes from Fuse 7 Red/Green - Tied to Red and Red/White goes to Tach When relay is pulled in Red/Blue Appears to get power and go to 2.5 which I am guessing it goes to the radio. The picture does not show. I hopes this helps somewhat.... Thom |
Thanks Thom
Here's what I ended up doing (just in case anyone ever has this trouble they can search) Let's start with speakers: I had 8 wires, but they were paired up. To find where the pair went, I used the 1.5v battery trick. Then I marked them RF, LF, RR, LR. Brown wire = ground white wire = remote for power antenna red/blue = ignition 12v power red/yellow (which had part of a fitting on it, but useless to me I cut it off) = constant 12v power. Now, this is a 1984 944na, yours might be different, because: I had no red/white wire nor a red/green wire. My thanks to Thom - you're the only one who tried to help Steve |
This is what I ended up doing: checked the speaker wires with a 1.5v battery, to find where they were going.
brown= ground white= remote for power antenna red/blue= 12v ignition red/yellow (which had part of a fitting on it, was no use to me since I didn't have the other part) = 12v constant and I said my clock, lighter, dome lights only when the key was in the ignition, so that red wire (the previous owner strung) I spliced that into one of the lighter's wires (which are red <- if anyone cares) now my clock keeps perfect time, my lighter works all the time, my dome light now comes on when I open the doors. Now this is for a 1984 944na, yours may be different, Just like I have no red/white wire nor red/green wire around the radio. Thanks Thom for taking the time and helping me out, Steve |
Steve,
Major props to you. I am very happy that you listed everything you found in your post. I remember reading this post a few months ago and made a mental note. I had to reference it today and found exactly what I was looking for, I also have a 1984 944. Thanks so much. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif |
