Stupid Timing belt

Im tired of worring about the timing belt. I check the belt and its fine and it feels tensioned and stuff, but im not completly sure. I dont have the special 5000 dollars tool to do it myself, and i dont know anybody around here that can replace porsche timing belts. The only guy who works on porsche's, i think is crappy and will do it wrong. Should i go to the Porsche dealer? If not, is this something a kid can do?

And how come that stupid 20 dollar piece of rubber can do 1500 dollars worth of damage to our engines? whats up with that

Where are you? Nothing in your ID or signature says anything about that.

if you don't have any experience doing the belt yourself, it is better left to a professional mechanic. and since you don't trust the local guy it would be better to take it to the dealer. the few hundred dollars you spend will be well worth it in the long-run

Yes, go to a dealer, esp. if you don't want your location revealed to let peeps tell you of a reputable shop. or check with your local PCA, they will let you know the best shops in your area to work on your car.

well we just had a timing belt replacement party in CT, and there was one two weeks earlier in CA. Maybe you could organize one in your region?

Cool Timing Belt

You have a couple of choices. One is to update your engine to use the spring loaded belt tensioner. The other is to rent the tension measuring tool (usually about $75.00). Either way, you will know that you won't have a problem with the timing belt.

Good Luck!

special tool - where to rent?

Hi,

I am gearing up to do my first timing belt remove/replace and the last bit I need to arrange for is the tool ...

Is there a place (other than the other board) where I can rent one of the special critters?

I've been on the other list (I'm a member there) and the guy that handles the tool loan thing hasn't emailed me back.

Kind Regards,

DL

Its called an 'interference design' engine where the valves open enough for the pistons to hit them if the valve timing is off. Most modern engines are of this design and all require periodic belt changes. A friends Prelude just snapped his belt and did the same damage. So its not a Porsche only issue.

remember, the price of a part is never a reflection of its importance but simply its cost of manufacture. even the strategic failure of a two-dollar lug-nut and the resultant departure of one lug-nut dependent wheel at speed can potentially cause tens-of-thousands of dollars worth of damage
