Question 928 vs 924 & equipment questions

I am very new to the Porsche world. I am interested in purchasing my 1st. I have found a few 944's in my area and 1 928. I wanted to know how large the power & speed difference is between the two models. What was the OEM tire on the 944 Circa 1987.

I also have several questions in regards to the 928. It is a 1986 the body and undercarriage look very good. The interior is pretty rough, and it has some problems with the electrical system 1)the battery keeps draining and 2) the drivers power seat won't move forward or back. It does move up and down. In addition the exhaust has been replaced with a freeflow (sound pretty good). The air conditioning has been removed. There are 115K miles on it and the asking price is $11,995. With all of the problems I want to know if I should walk from this car, offer a much reduced price, or go with a 944S. Can't find a turbo to drive. Any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Sarge

a 928 with electrical issues... walk away, walk fast, walk far far away. Besides that, the price is to high for the condition you have described.

I was wondering about the price, I thought it was high, But what about say a 928 and 944 around the same price. which way do you go.

At that price range, the 944 had better be a turbo and or in mint condition. Other 944 series cars in that range are the S2's and the converts. A low grade 968 is also within the range.

IMOP, the 928 cars are heavy, powerfull and have a lot of potential. They are however, more of a touring type car vs sports car. The 928 series has some very paticular maintence things that keep me out of the game.

so, your question, all things considered and both cars in same range and condition...

I'd still opt for the 944. Why? I prefer the 911 style dash layout, the seating arrangement, the fuel economy and the agressive looks of the body in it's stock configuration.

It takes a lot of effort to make a 928 look agressive. The interior looks like something from the "Space 1999" tv series and to me, the rear body glass area remindes me of the AMC Pacer... I know I will raise a few complaints for my opinion of 928's but that's how I see it.

Most 86 928s are auto trans. It's not fun if you want to drive a sport car. The car like you are talking about is only about $6k or less. Try to search 928 in cars.com. There are a bunch of them under 6k.
928 and 944t is about same price and hp range. I don't know which one handles better and costs more to maintain. I think there are a few guys on this BB have 928. Ask them. I'm interested to marry a 944t or 928 too. 928 does look better, I think.

if you're 25 or older and you have a good driving record, i think a 944 turbo is the way to go. it's likely never again will you need (or have) a car that's any faster, or upgradeable, or fun. they are seemingly getting harder to find, but well worth the wait.

928's look good (well, at least the front end does) and are more comfortable, but expensive to own, even more so than a 944. and like any n/a car, not very upgradeable.

If I had $12,000 to spend on a Porsche, I would definately buy a 951. In the end, I believe you will be much more happier with a 951 than a 928. I like the 928's, but I prefer the 951 for a variety of reasons. Whatever you do, don't impulse buy. Look everywhere. Autotrader, Rennlist, eBay, your local classifieds, etc. Good luck!

yeah, and you can get a turbo that's in real good condition for $8k-$9k, too. $4k in modifications will get you BIG hp, if you so desire.

mine is stock except for a lindsey boost enhancer ($90) and weltmeister chips ($399), and puts out flywheel 255+ hp/300 tq! that's only on $500!

The electrical problem on the 928 is that the battery is discharging when the car is parked. It may be related to the power seat problem. I was thinking of offering $8K for the 928 as it sits. The 944 is a 944S they are asking $9,900 Which seems high to me for a 87 even though it is in very good shape. I like the performance of the 928, but I'm not sure yet if I want to get involved with this particular one.

I'd run from this 928 where are you in the country ( or out of it for that matter ). Go to WWW.RECYCLER.COM and check out the 928's and 944's forsale I think you will find that even your 8k is high for a car with this kind of problems. at 11K you can have a nice s4 928 with low miles or a monster 944T depends on what you want.. Also the big advantage of these cars is that you can work on them if you are not going to I'd have to tell you to think twice about getting either the resale value won't hold up aginst too many heavy repairs that are done in a shop. So good luck

God yes 11K is high for a 928. My S4 cost me 15K in 98. As far as breaking down. Well, the 928 seems to have about a 3'rd the problems as my 944.

If you want to pull your engine every time something goes wrong, by all means buy the 928. Price is VERY high for the discription and problems. Go for the 944. Its easier to work on and less expensive ( and probably more fun). I'm starting to look for a good 85.5 ( or newer )944 for myself.

I think you should stay very far away from that 928. Parts are very expensive and if you do not do your own work, so are Hans and Fritz.

For about $8k, you can get a really nice 951 (944 Turbo) and you will be very pleased with the performance. It's way easier to make big hp with the 951 rather than the 928. Don't get me wrong, I really like the 928 and was looking for one when I stumbled over my 951, which I got for under $6k. There are issues related to maintenance and parts availability with the 928 that are no problem with the 951. Also, I would dare say that in bang for the buck, the 951 is THE BEST deal going in Porsche. Drive one well kept 951 and the--- what was that other car again,..918? 999?? You'll see what I mean. A word of caution, the 951 will cause a permanent grin while driving.

Keep searching, it took me 8 months to find one I liked. On each car, check for maintenance records. Be prepared to travel a bit and if you're not a mechanic, have a shop do a prepurchase inspection for you. Take the list they give you with the costs for the "Do this or Die" items and rethink any starting offer. Drive a bunch of cars, learn the nuances of each model and have a good time looking.

dave, i can't even think of a better value in a car than a 951. btw, value=performance/cost. can anyone name any cars that are better values than a 951?

Blackfoot, I agree value=performance/cost.
924S-160hp/$3000 vs. 951-260/$8000
I think 924S is a very good starter to get into Porsche.

Cool

Well I guess this thread is a moot point now. I found an 88 928 at a local Porsche dealer for a decent price. I picked it up yesterday afternoon. I still can't get the grin off of my face. The only thing I can say is WAY COOL.

Thanks for the comments.
