Post Voltage regulator PN?

Hey, does anyone happen to know the part number for the voltage regualtor?

I've heard of voltage regulator fix using part's from ELGIN via NAPA. What i'd prefer is to get the actual piece from BOSCH.

Yes. You don't need to replace it with a Bosch and puting in one that limits at a higher voltage, say 14.4 or 14.5 is a good idea. Higher ones will charge up the battery faster and most people think Bosch went too far in setting their standard regulators so low - down towards 14.0 v. Should cost somewhere around 10 to no more than 20 bucks for the regulator from local alternator shops.

Thumbs up

What a coincidence, I was going try to do some work to my car this weekend on the AFM and while I was in there replace the brush holder and voltage regulator as a maintenance item. After reading some of the post at this site I went to NAPA today and asked about the ECHLIN part# E455. The guy was able to find the part in the book ($6) but it only showed a picture of an alternator brush, voltage regulator was nowhere to be found. The recommended list did include Porsches, Audi, VW, Volvo etc. The parts guy suggested that I call around as he would have to order the parts in anyway. I did just that and the first shop I phoned had the complete brush holder with the voltage regulator for $35. I know what you are thinking but this is $35 Canadian money or $23 US currency. I thought it was a good deal seeing I donn't have to do any soldering and I had to go back to work.

The guy at the alternator shop did say that this part is used on a large percentage of Bosch alternators and is very common so you should be able to find it at any place that rebuilds Bosch starters and alternators.

I'll install mine this weekend.

Everyone should consider replacing the alternator brush holder and/or brushes at 100,000 miles. This is definately a maintenance item !!! Cost approx, $20

I followed the instructions in the Haynes manual to installed my new brush holder/ voltage regulator today. Everything came apart as suggested in the book but installing the new brush holder/voltage regulator was not as easy as removing the old one. You have to insert it at an angle, apply pressure to compress the brush springs while lining up the screw holes (easier said than done). Hold the brush holder in place (remember the spring tension) and install the 2 screws as much as possible before letting go. Finish tightening the screws and put everthing back togeather. If you are familar with disconnecting the battery and removing the AFM/air filter housing the whole thing should take about 20 minutes from start to finish, but who said this was a race ;^).

My car just rolled past the 100,000 mile mark I was not having any problems with charging but the car is running a little on the rich side and before I went and mess with anything I thought I should make sure the voltage to the DME was stable.

Here is what I found, the alternator brushes do not wear evenly not even close. The longest was less than half the length of the new ones and the shorter of the two was only 1/4 inch in length (very bad).

I took the car for a drive and everything seems as before but from what I discovered, I am glad I made the change. I saved $$$, extended the life of my alternator and the possibility of been stranded somewhere.
