Thermo-switch or Thermostat?

the thermo-switch, is the thing that turns on the radiator fans, correct? i'm going to borrow a multi-meter from work tomorrow to test my thermoswitch, although there is no doubt in my mind, that it is bad... since my radiator fans would occasionally/never come on automatically...

Most likely the thermoswitch gone bad. If not, check the fan relay, although it is most likely the thermoswitch in this case.

A quick fix is to buy a 2 way toggle switch from autozone or radio shack and hook up some wire to the swich then to the fan switch plugs and u can switch the fans on of off when u want to from inside the car. its a cheap fix for the moment until you get the new thermoswitch.

Borrow a multi meter? Why don't you buy one? That and a 12 VDC test light.

ds475, I have a multimeter and a test light, along with a new thermo switch I need to put in my 83. Is your's early or late 85? I procrastinate, but my fans work, at a later temp than b4, though.

early 85. i was also wondering, is coolant going to drain out when i take the old thermoswitch out, to put in the new one?

what do you need the multimeter/test ligtht for if you already have the new thermo-switch? if i were you, i wouldn't even screw with testing the old one... just slap the new one in.

You will lose coolant. How much depends on how fast your are.

ds475, I'm just going to change it out. The reference I made about the multimeter and test light was an offer (which I didn't clearly state, my bad) to the fact that you are welcome to use mine if you ever wanted or need one. There are few here that live in Austin, I'm always willing to help out a fellow pelicanhead. Now about those , go to autozone and by the Bosch arms and blades, they are only about $9, and work well.

what does "btw" mean

it's easy enuff to drain/add coolant.

i think i paid about $17 for a porsche sending unit/+shipping and would have been able to get the cheaper one locally and not had to pay shipping but didn't know about it at the time.

ain't hindsite always 20/20.

what if i tilt my car forward by jacking up the ass? that way the coolant will go to the front, rather than the back.

you're going to lose some fluid no matter how you do it.

you also have a drain on the bottom of the radiator on the left side

if it's been over two years, a good idea.
