could it be the new plugs?

i recently changed my oil and since it was my b-day not long ago, my buddy got my new plugs, Bosch platinums, (not the +4 or +2 ones)
we went ahead and changed the plugs with my oil change torqueing them to the proper specs.
i have never had a problem with starting the car until recently.
the car will start on its first crank but the idle will drop to like 200 rpm then bounce to 1,000 then back and maybe bounce a couple times more but then will cut-off
i can start it again and feather the throttle so it stays at about 1000 rpm and then once it warms up it's fine
it doesn't happen all the time but does happen more often then not these days and the only thing that has changed are the plugs, the oil and the onset of fall/winter weather.

any ideas?

You knocked off the plug to the idle control valve.

... its under the intake....

First bypass the valve... you short out b & C on the test plug..... if the idle goes up and runs fine then it could be the idle stabilizer valve.

Cold Start Problem

Use the stock plugs, they work just fine. If you're goping to upgrade your plugs you should upgrade your wires also, so what you've changed actually has an effect. remember a spark is a spark unless you increase the flow of current ie bigger wires means more current.

are you suggesting that I should remove the plugs i have now and replace them with my old ones? and what are stock plugs for an '87 '44 NA anyway?

actually i never intended on replacing the plugs at all
like i said, my friend got them for me as a b-day gift. when he first presented them to me, my initial reaction was to save them for later but he wanted to install them (cause he wanted to get a chance to work on a porsche ) so we went ahead and did so

it is my intention to upgrade the entire ignition system but that's low on my priority list for now

Put the original plugs in. It's listed inside the door panel ( ithink) it is a bosch plug, they cost about a buck or 2.. the ugnition system in your car is pretty sweet as is. Why do you want to upgrade it?.. to go faster?.. these cars are pretty maxed out as is. The more you try to Upgrade them the more horrible they run and subsequently you'll be posting here asking how to fix stuff you shouldn't have done to your highly engineered car.
If you want a faster car, throw a chevy 350 in it, that's an upgrade, slamming super rice plugs in your Porsche is like putting 93 octane in your grandmothers K-car it's not gonna make much if any difference.

....o.... kay....

i don't know what i said that gave you the impression that i had any intention of ricing my car out

and i didn't know bosch platinums were considered "super rice plugs"

and yes, i would like to make my car go faster but i never knew that classified me as some-sort of porsche noob that's hoping to break 1/4 mile records

i don't feel the need to justify my reasons for wanting to upgade anything in my car. your help is appreciated but chill out with the patronizing tone

Where it's going or where it's being taken?.. why would someone get compltely offended and continue to drag something out unless they have a point to make.. So, what's your point? I'm stoopid (nice spelling by the way) everyone knows that already and I'm not denying it, I actually never remember claiming to be a rogue scholar.... so, if you're that defensive about rice and all of the implications that go with being down with rice, why is this still being debated?.. hehehe.. Hey man, I'm not the guy to try and out insult, I said my apologies and I think you can put this to bed, unless there's a deeper wound that I've seemed to open or exposed something that set you off.
On the other hand, I don't give a rats a$$ what you do with your car, but would obviously advise against any ridiculousness as far as "upgrades" are concerned because usually people that make posts here wanting to modify their sweet stock porsche 944 series cars don't have a frigging clue. It's dangerous to mess with any car unless you are completely qualified to do so. So, when you posted that you swapped your plugs for a high performance plug and now you're having some problems, well, I just A$$umed that you were a total nimrod on his way down the path of mediocrity when it comes to Automobile responsibility, hey faster louder, faster louder, quicker quicker!! where the F are you going anyway? to the 7-11 for smokes or are you tracking this car. If you're tracking your car and don't know how to swap out plugs then I don't wanna be there that day whe you show up with your Moded car that's gonna loose it's wheels in the first turn because you don't know ( aren't qualified) what owning one of these cars is all about. Dude I'm not hammering you, well, maybe I am but don't call me stoopid.. I'm not the one that swapped my plugs and now has a problem big guy.
I wouldn't know if the plugs purchased would be the correct plugs or not, if it's not reccomended I wouldn't do it, and these plugs you mentioned aren't what's spec'd on the car, so I responded with an advisory against using something other than what was spec'd and an advisory against doing anything else to "upgrade the car" ie faster faster fsater.. vroom vroom vroom.
Do me a favor, when you reach your Horsepower goal, make sure to upgrade your suspension to match the new power so after you run your car into a wall at the "track" you can't blame the car for being a P.O.S. you can blame your lack of experience as a driver and responsible sports car owner...
And I'm stoopid?.. yeah o.k.
