Strange hummin' from my rear

Lately I've noticed a strange humming coming from behind me in my car. i don't have the seats or any sound deadening in, so i hear everything. It isn't consistent, or repetitive, but kind of off and on and different volumes, kind of like two people conversing... different frequencies, volumes, rhythms.

Whether it is in gear or not, or the clutch is pushed or not, it still makes the sound, the sound doesn't change with a change in engine speed. Could it be CV related since the sound doesn't change with a change in the engine/transmission "tests"?

also, i've never noticed this till today, and since a cool front came in, i haven't THOUGHT i had to pop my hood and put my radiator fans on, because it was cool enough to cool my engine, while moving. i never got but just barely over 1/2 way, even after running it vigorously and for a while. might i add, it was running great :-)
but, today i got stuck in stop and go traffic, and it got pretty warm, and into the overheat portion, about 1/2 way on that part. and i didn't have the radiator fans on... I couldn't get out of traffic, so i pushed myself through (my blinker keeps burning fuses...) and i got out of traffic, down a road with no outlet (as posted) just to try to drive around and let my engine cool down... but i didn't realize i could just pull the cable and get it to pop the hood, i thought i need a tool to hold the outer sleeve because i've needed one before (the plastic hood popper housing broke)

my engine has been making those sounds after that traffic incident.

a humming from the rear of the car can mean a worn fuel pump

get near the rear of the car while the engine's running (but try not to ingest too many exhaust fumes)... is the humming coming from the fuel pump (little cyllinder before the fuel filter on the passenger side of the rear of the car)?

well... i don't think it's my fuel pump, because i've heard my fuel pump run before/during/after said hum.

Lay off the mexican food. Sorry, I couldn't stop myself.

If it is the fuel pump, was it hot outside when the noise started. Try venting the gas cap and see if that makes it stop. Not a permanent fix though.

as CJ said. it could very well be the fuel pump. the sound that you are describing is very similar to that when one is on its way out.
