I have a small coolant leak. I can see a trail of dried up coolant running from the gasket area between the block and the little casting that the vent screw is on. This casting has the upper rad hose connected to it and is held on by two 6mm allen bolts. I bought a new gasket this evening at the dealer. Can someone with a Porsche service manual tell me what the torque spec is for to two 6mm allen bolts and the vent screw.

Don't know the CORRECT torque but from experiance, I wouldn't go much further than 11 lbs./ft. You really don't need to torque this part, just use your elbow and some judgement. Honest!

You may not actually have a leak. The dried coolant trail could be residue from prior bleedings of coolant system.
Anyway, Diesel's advise is good - don't go over torque on those bolts. nice and snug with a wrench that is only as long as your hand is wide. Also, that bleeder screw seems to get stripped by over torque frequently. If you are really leaking, I bet that is the real cluprit. Either replace the whole cast fitting or tap out the hole to a slightly larger size. [This message has been edited by IceShark (edited 07-27-2001).] |

Thanks guys! The engine was washed after the last service and there is no trace of coolant from the vent bolt. I'll take your advice and work on it this weekend.

Thanks to Diesel and Iceshark the leak is a thing of the past. I replaced the gasket and torqued the 6mm allen bolts to 11 ft/lbs and after venting the system torqued the 12mm vent bolt to 15 ft/lbs.
NO MORE LEAK!!! Mark '86 944NA |
