Post 1987 944S ... Should I Buy It?

Tell me what you guys think. Found this lady that is selling a 1987 944S. Originally she was asking $3,800, however yesterday it developed a steering problem.

She took it to her mechanic, who told her it would cost about $1,000 to fix. The car has 145,000 mile on it, so I am assuming it must be the steering rack. He filled up her power steering fluid and said she should be okay for a while. Do you think this is the case or could it be just the pump itself leaking? I won't know until I look at the car.

My point being, with this new problem she only wants $2,000 or she is going to donate the car. Is it whorth it?

She said they put a lot of work into it. She is the second owner. She has had the car for 7 years. It is red with tan interior. Needs some body work (both front fenders, not sure how much) and the paint is flaking.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

How is the interior? What's wrong with front fenders? Rust? or crashed?
Other things, such as: timing belt/waterpump, clutch, tires, wheel bearings, AC and oil leakings?

GO FOR IT. Assuming the basic maintenance things are in order, 2k is a bargain.
History... given that she took it to a shop regarding the stearing problem, I wager she was on top of the maintenance and just let the cosmetic items go as most owners tend to do from time to time.

Stearing problem. hard to say, could be a pump, could be the rack, could just be a hose or had run low on fluid. either way, its a sub 1K fix.

Thanks for the replies!

I am going to look at the car on Sunday afternoon to get more details (interior condition, rust, maintenance records, what work has been done, etc). I'm bringing my digital camera, so I'll take pictures and post them here and let you know what happens.

This is the first time she went to this mechanic, so it maybe something simple. I'll have to ask her why she didn't take it to her regular mechanic.

Buy it quick before she changes her mind. You could part the car out and make money, provided the mechanicals are good.
