I don't think it'd go up there to begin with. I don't think it'd even do 8500rpm, our stock redline is around 6200 not 8k like that rx-7.

Yup. And Wankel engines tolerate over-rev extremely well since there's no valvetrain (which is normally the limiting factor in a street engine). They may get a bit of eccentric-shaft whip though and that's the main limiting factor for a Wankel.

Ok, the actual redline of that car is 7K. And it ran for what was it...almost 10 minutes?? And the reason it failed was the dummies forgot to put the cap on the radiator!

Cooling turns out to be important after all!

sigh. one of my buddies has a highly modded 3rd gen rx-7. he is on his 3rd "rebuild" in less than a year - cool concept but you really have to know what you are doing with those motors. there is little margin for mistake. the last two times he has had Pineapple Racing make motors for him.

should have kept that engine , it obviously had enough margin on it for some serious tuning....

agreed. I just don't like wasting things. I wonder what it would have taken to fix the broken rotor

Most likely a complete seal set, and new rotor housings. Rotors were probably ok, but if it had lost and apex seal, it could have dinged the rotor, and therefore, two new rotors are needed. Maybe side plates as well, those are often a little too worn. If a rotary needs to rebuilt, it needs to be rebuilt. Cost of those parts?? Around 1500, plus labor, but it's pretty straightforward.

They probably didn't throw too much away, but they will have to get it ALL now! (Shoulda left the rad cap on, dummies!) The thing would revved forever.

Rotaries are getting a bit of a bad rap due to the 3rd gen. That car was soooooooo fast, right from the factory, look at the specific power output.....what was it, 280 hp out of 1.3 liters?? Or 90 cubic inches. That works out to about 3 hp per cubic inch. That's a lot! BUT, it was SO easy to mod, that everybody did it. But that's pushing it for a street motor, and more often than not, poof! But remember, it's really not the rotaries fault!!!

And also, keep in mind that the last rotary sold in America, and therfore the youngest, is almost ten years old!

I got a racer discount from Mazdaspeed for a seal set and two rotor housings for about 900. Add 3 side plates, and take away the discount and you are up to 1500. If you assemble them your self, your labor is worth whatever you can make working overtime!

well, look at the bright side. considering the rebuild costs for one of our motors, it's cheap

i thought long and hard about getting an rx-7 before i bought this car. i decided it was too risky. youre either looking at a higher mileage motor or a rebuilt one. its a time bomb in either case. i figure if im going to buy car with a potentially explosive motor it might as well be a porsche, and it might as well be a motor i understand well enough to potentially rebuild. i have no confidence in mazda to produce anything too worthwhile
once i get out of school id love to have one though. i think the wankel is the single awesomest innovation (also a german one) in automobiles since sliced bread.
