Post Ahmet - let's talk Magnaflow

Ahmet - I remember you were looking into the Magnaflow product as exhaust replacement for your 44.

I was checking it out as well for my 51, but it seems Magnaflow lits vendors on their website that either haven't heard of their product, or simply are not Magnaflow dealers.

So I called the techline and got a number for dealer location, but cannot get an answer at that number. In addition, I asked the tech guy if, for our cars, which locates the muffler about 14" away from the rear of the car, it is necessary to purchase a muffler, cut the tip off and weld on an extended tip (Magnaflow offers both). The guy said that method would look like s**t, and reccomended buying a SS universal muffler with a simple inlet and outlet, and welding the tip to that.

Well, after I hung up, it occurred to me that the website does not indicate whether the inlet/outlet and tip sizes are ID or OD, and doesn't really say if the universal mufflers are also flow-through, or come fully polished...?

I know you did some research on this - what did you find out about dealers and components? Did you have particular pieces in mind?

Thanks.

I don't think their universal mufflers are either mirror finish, nor straight through. It looks like the diameters offered are ID, but you might want to get something a tad larger than stock size for a 944 t just to be safe.

There are a few dealers I've personally been to around here, I can try to dig that up if you want, but you know I live in Raleigh.

I was considering getting one of the race series, using the tip provided, after choosing a model that's the right dimentions. I seem to remember several that would work. I'll try to look into this, and get back to you (extremely busy right now), btw are you coming to the last auto-x of the season with THSCC? It'll be my first in a while (<75 days for license).

yeah - I was going race series as well, but the tips aren't long enough to clear the rear valance on the 51...

I guess I'll have to call the tech guy again, as straight through is mandatory, and full-polish is highly desired.

And borla is twice the price... :^(

Check out what they have on www.summitracing.com. They have the least expensive exhaust components I've seen yet. I think I'm goin with a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler....

Is DynoMax a flowthrough muffler? I didn't think so, for some reason...

Anyway, just got off the phone w/another Tech guy and he verified that the sizing on the website is in ID, that the universal fit mufflers are indeed flowthrough, and the stainless universal fit versions are fully polished.

What I am looking at, for my 951 is the following:

14216 SS center to center 2.5" ID inlet/outlet 5"x8" oval bodied muffler, 14" long (20" overall)

35105 SS angle-cut full-polish single walled 3.5" tip, 18" long (needed 14" - guess I'll move the muffler in toward the passenger compartment slightly), to fit a 2.5" muffler.

10716 SS J-pipe, 2.5" ID w 4" radius on seamless bend - getting this for any extra material I may need for proper fitment/attachment to existing system.

The NC distributor is Northgate Muffler in Asheboro. Their number is 336-672-3010.

I haven't gotten a chance to call for pricing yet, but will post that info when I do.

ok then, finally found a local supplier...

Turns out the muffler (keep in mind, it is stainless, and straight through) runs $110.00 to $130.00 depending on whether or not it is in stock, etc...

The tip is $60.00 (ouch)

The J-pipe runs $30.00

Is this still a good deal on the muffler? I'm not sure... How much is Borla, and is it also Stainless Steel?

decisions, decisions...

ok, looking at Summit, the Borla XR-1 is $130.00 in SS. I am wondering how bad the noise is with this muffler? How the sound QUALITY is affected?

Also, Borla has a SS turbo performance muffler for $104.00, and there is the DynoMAx ultra flow in SS for $100.00

All are SS, and straight-through, AFIK...

Anybody run any of these, and can comment on the sound quality, volume, etc? I am using this on my increasingly (to heavy)performance-oriented 951, but I do have to allow the neighbors to sleep on the ate nights, and pass whatever inspection laws there may be for mufflers?

86, I am currently running the ANSA - great sound, good performance, but it ISN'T stainless (at least, mine is rusting!), and it is as HEAVY as the stock setup!

keith...I just replied to that other thread, too. As far as weight is concerned, the speedforce 3" exhaust is around 17 pounds IIRC...stock is probably heavier. It is also 100% stainless steel, so it should never rust. I felt like the car picked up 5 or 10 HP too.

yeah, that is significantly lighter than stock! I'm a metal sculptor, so I figured I could PROBABLY put together an exhaust (lol), or I'd be saving up for Tim, too.

Thinking about going with Borla XR-1 at this point, as the speedforce bullet looks as if it would be comparable in terms of noise levels. If you say it's tolerable, then it's probably ok for me...

Seems like all the SS straight-through mufflers are within $30.00 of each other, so why not go Borla (the only one that advertises weight reduction...)?

$110 to 130? That sounds way too high! You can buy them here from a rice store for that much (and they usually mark up their prices up the wazoo).

Their site lists distributors, I'd call others up before considering a muffler at that price.

PS: Personally, you can just grab a muffler, do the rest of the piping for relatively cheap at a good muffler shop, and you can even end up with a cat-back for less than what decent mufflers seem to go for.

right, that's the plan.

$100 - 130 seems like the low end for SS mufflers. IN FACT, most of those prices are from Summit, and a LOT LESS than MSRP..!

If anyone can find them cheaper than that, I'd sure like to know!

Ahh, looks like GHL has a universal 6" can w/2.5" inlet and 4" slash tip for $90.00

They also have one w/out tip for same price...

I wonder if 6" diameter can is too visually large to fit "in" the rear valance (since the one with the tip would have to be positioned so far back for the tip to clear...)?

Since I know you guys are hanging onto the edge of your seats for this topic, I'll continue:

There is a company that makes Satin or Mirror-finish oval tubing for marine applications out of 316 Stainless? (I think that's it). Am getting more info on this product. Does that sound like a material that is thick/durable enough for use as a 14" exhaust tip?

engineering types?

Keith-
Keep us posted on how you are going to finally do this, types, pn etc, I have to do something soon with mine, the area on one side of the tip has a hole rusted into it.
