Shut out - Grrr

My car seems to be trying to tell me something... my driver's side exterior door handle is broken, and now the rear hatch won't open either!

Funny though - the sunroof won't lock down (needs new gears and lifting arms).

Does it want me to go in through the top? I'm sure that would be quite an entertaining sight in a holdiay dress!

So - need advice as to how to get the back open, and looking for any parts needed. Not having a bunch of luck finding the door handle in used parts.

Maybe someone in my area just want to trade some time fixing this persnickety crap for a detail plus parts? I'm a good cleaner... not so confident fixing!

So the rear hatch won't even open with a key?

Nope - won't open with the key, or with the interior release (which previously did work)

you will need one goat, or 4 chickens if a goat is not available
and a voodoo priest and about 3 hours of time for the procedure

I've had some luck on stuck hatches by having some one hold the key while I move the rear of the hatch side to side while lifting up.

You might have to crawl into the back and pull the carpet down to check if the link to the latch is moving when some one twists the key.

Welcome...

Changing the door handle is a VERY easy job in the 944 and I think the 924 is not much different in that respect. There is a screw inside the door jamb that holds it in place. Unscrew...a simple lift and slide toward the rear of the car and it lifts out. The clip that attaches the latch to the rest of the mechanism may have broken or just come off. Might want to check that before you go searching for new parts.

While your in there those rubber seals on the handle are only about $1.00 each.

Yeah! Mechanism just came off! I got the door handle off and I can see how depressing the rod thingy opens the latch, but my total lack of mechanical ability leaves me stumped as to how the handle seats into the top of the rod.

I'm so close!

No luck yet with the rear hatch. I'll enlist some stronger types to help pull up on it, but how much can it take?

Thank you thank you thank you!

Be patient with the door thing..it takes everyone a long time.

Don't pull on the wing.

Probably heat and lack of use has just made the rubber seals very friendly with one another....
or it is VERY out of adjustment.

Check to be sure the mechanism is actually turning the lock.

When it opens (hopefully) use some meguires rubber dressing (armour all) and clean all well.

I have to unload the mechanism on the trunk latch to get mine to work when it is cold. Unload = push down on the hatch while turning key.

My advice for you is, if it's not opening by pulling, crawl in there, pull the carpet down (it just snaps in) at the back, there are rods that go to each latch, they pull one way or another, I can't remember which way, if I recall correctly, they were held onto the lock cylinder with plastic clips, so it's possible they broke. If it hasn't come open already, it's quite possible there is something wrong in there, and it'll make things worse if you pull too hard.

Once you are able to get the rear hatch open, I would suggest loosening the bolts that hold the latch mechanisms to gether, This will keep them from binding up. I had a similar thing happen, and all is OK now.
