The oem or mahle filters are supposed to leave a bit of oil "in the can" which circulates during start-up....I believe.

Just read a web article that basically says cheap oil filters are just that...cheap.

I use those $3.00 filters for quick run throughs to clean it out after repairs, only then change it for the better one when I put in the real oil.

I am doing my front seals this weekend and since I will now be leak-free I am switching to Mobil 1 ---15/50.

Splurge a little...
Use Mahle or, I have heard the Mobil 1 filter is not bad either.

Factory filters

As I stated in another post, factory oil filters are the best available for your 944/T. Many people do not know that the pressure relief valve and spring are specially designed for your engine. This particular design is not always replicated in aftermarket filters. Mahle filters come in as a close second, however I would not use any other brand. Other filters can cause oil pressure fluctuations, there is an old TSB regarding this information. Remember, Porsche oil filters can be purchased elsewhere in large quantites at a discount, check the back of Panorama for participating suppliers who have specials on factory parts.

All of the off the shelf oil filters that I have seen have at the auto parts stores have rust in them. The whole idea is to get little parts of metal out of the engine oil, not put more metal parts in. Buy a ten pack of oil filters from Zims for next to nothing, so you don't have to even worry about back flow valves and rust. I bought a NAPA filter once in a crunch. It cost a lot! I could have gotten 4 filters froms Zims...

With all the so called "marketing" STP has done over the years, I'd wonder if it was just some generic filter out there that they smacked their "STP" name on.

I'd ask, "is there any reason to use a STP filter".

I would stick with the stock type OEM filters that have the built in check valve system, especially because the 944 has an upside down filter that would otherwise drain out thereby allowing for a dry start every time. You want oil to be in the filter when you hit the ignition, and the check valve will make sure this happens.

a "dry-start" will (probably) show up on the oil pressure gauge. Instead of seeing the gauge jump up into position, you may see a moment of no pressure before it registers, that just my hunch.

I know there are cheaper filters out there, but I'd stay with the OEM type.
