Well, last night I installed my four spoke steering wheel in the 944. Far better than the stock three spoke captains wheel in my opinion. Installation was easy. But, now the wheel is rubbing on something and making an annoying squeaking sound. Can the retaining bolt be tightened too much? The steering wheel also sits closer to the driver than the stock one did. Now the turn signal and wiper switches are no longer in a comfortable position. Is this normal? Are all of the four spoke steering wheels the same? I own a 1983 944 and am not sure if there is a certain four spoke for the early models. Dumb questions, I know, but I am just plain stumped. Thanks in advance!

I don't know about the clearance, but when I took my 3 spoke off to fix the dash, and then put it back in, I got the same sqeaking sound you're talking about, and it is still there till today ... i don't know what to do about it either ...

The early 4 spoke wheel....has a part number of 944 397 084 02
the late 4 spoke wheel has a part number of 944 397 084 08 There may be a difference in size of the wheel...... Alex ------------------ ![]() 86' 944 79' 924 (R.I.P) |

AH HA!!! The turn signal catch on the back of the wheel was rubbing on the metal enclosure inside the steering wheel column. The backing plate behind the wheel comes off via three small screws. I just swapped the two backing plates. The older three spoke's turn signal catch is smaller than the later four spoke's. Problem solved. Now somebody needs to provide me a solution to the problem of the turn signal/wiper being in a rather uncomfortable position. Thanks to those that replied!
