Hatch won't stay closed
The auto pop thingy on my '84 944 wasn't working, and the I don't have the right key for the lock, so I was just pulling the hatch up with brute strength (prob not a good idea). But now it does not stay shut at all, which was really embarrassing when it came up while I was playing with the local ricers over the weekend- any ideas how to alleviate this problem or maybe how to temporarily rig it shut? Thanx- Adam

I had/have the same problem with my hatch. If you peel back the carpet right inside the hole on the left side where the peg goes in, you will see two pieces of silver metal that grasp the peg when it is inserted. On mine, it does not close all the way in order to grasp and hold the peg when closed. I must peel the carpet and pull on a long thin steel rod that closes the two clasps. You can see them move close together when you move the rod; open and close open and close as you move the rod. I don't know if there is a spring operating the mechanism, I have not been able to locate an exploded view of the operating mechanism to fix it once and for all! Remember driverside hole inside hatch area. See if that helps any. good luck Pedro ![]() |

My hatch has popped open twice in the past 2 years at autox. It sucks because they make you stop and you lose the run. The latches can be adjusted. The pegs screw in and out. Becareful because the threads might be corroded and you can snap the peg off. I did.
