Doug: thanks for the props on my wheels. The PO had them on when I purchased the car: he said they were 911 rims. I believe that they are C2's. They are 16", which means I can run stock classes in autox!

stupenal, I don't know but this is my second 944 and be prepare and have like $3,000 or more for some unexpeded repairs on your new 944. Make sure you check the engine and trans good!! http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif If I was you get a 87 and up 944.

I've heard stories of the 16 Valve 944's having a pretty noteable Torque drop off in certain RPM ranges that the 8valve's didn't have. I say Either an '83 or '89 2.7L

Craig's right. But only with the 2.5 liter 944S. Even though they have greater hp and torque (higher up) than the regular 8 valve, there is enough torque lost in the low to mid range (coupled with the car's heavier weight) to actually make the "S" feel slower under normal driving conditions (underline "normal"!). -MAS |
Everyone keeps saying that the 1989 is much heavier than the earlier cars. How much heavier? Does anyone have the weights of the different model years of N/A cars?
Also, does anyone know if the 89 N/A was available with the M030 suspension? Kaos 85/2 |
I read that the 85/2-89 were not actually heavier but quicker and lighter (depending on options, although I think they are all the same!!!), some weight was gained by adding powersteering etc. But some steel parts were also replaced such as aluminum suspension components......
In an article I read by the Technical advisor for the Porsche Club of America on how to purchase a 944, he mentions improved performance in the 85/2 and above 944's over the 83-85 1/2, although he does not provide specifics. I guess the question would be...all things being equal.....and both cars were mint. Would a 83'944 be as good as a 89'944.......... |
you forgot to mention air bags and the 10 speaker system on the later LATER cars.

all the n/a 944's were roughly the same weight, according to the 944 faq here:

an '89 2.7 will run circles around an '83. Who honestly believes Porsche would make a car perform worse and worse over its lifecycle. Not me. Mr. Blackfoot is correct!

He first claimed he had 2 offers in at 4k, and when i rejected, he asked me what i'd offer. 2750 i said. Now, he wants to negotiate more. Porsche factory rims are expensive alone (check them out with your sources)." He has chrome 911s on it (old style, like fuchs but with chrome triangular shapes). I personally think its ugly, and i really want some 17" c2 rims on it. THus, how much are those chrome 911s worth? I'm glad to hear that the later model 944s didnt lose performance. If he uses that against me...i won't believe him. As for the suggestions on getting 89 models, those seem very hard to come by. I dont seem many classified for them. Anyways, I'm going to go talk to some porsche independent mechanics and ask if they know of any clients wishin to sell. One last thing on maintenance, is it safe to assume around 1k to 2k per year? And I'm also assuming around 1k immediately once I buy the car to get it into shape (even though the maintenance on the car is impressive). Any other estimates? |
I agree with blackfoot. The 951 is definitely the best bang for the buck. However, S2's are wonderful cars too. I'm deeply in love with mine. Honestly, if you're only looking to spend $5000-$6000, then you can pretty much rule out an S2. I never see them that cheap. Maybe a 1989 in poor condition, but you don't want to buy your first Porsche in poor condition. I bought my 1991 S2 in July of 2000 for $9700. At the time, it had 120000 miles on it. I hardly ever see 1989 S2's for sale. Mostly 1990 and 1991's. So, you're probably not gonna find an S2 for that cheap in good condition.

Well you may think they're ugly but many people disagree, (me!) On ebay right now, there are 4 all black 16" fuchs at ~$400 reserve not met, and 2 black and chrome 15" ~$400, reserve not met. So they are worth something, and you get a better price if you find the right buyer. (My mechanic wants mine real bad. Not a chance though)
