Cone filter.....

Finished my cone filter installation and today took it for a test drive. Sound is nice but the car has not gained any power, actually the car feels slower... I had a K&N filter in the air box before and now I put on a JR cone filter. To eliminate the problem with the filter sucking hot air from the engine I placed the filter in front of the cooling water tank and hooked it up to the air flow meter with a 75 mm hose.

I know some of you guys also have tried cone filter, what do you think? Did you get more/less power? Nice sound?

You may have a less restrictive air filter, but you still have the same old AFM. You will need to replace or modify the AFM for any huge gains. Plus you may also be running a little leaner now. Might want to change your mixture.

What commonly happens with cone filters & 944s is this: engine bay heat goes sky high at stop or slow. Air will cool down to ambiant if you get the car moving about 20mph or greater. So if you switch to take air directly out of the engine bay behind the headlight (pretty standard location) you are sucking in much hotter air when you start out, so less performance.

Once you get rolling and get cooler air in there you may or may not see any improvement from the cone filter due to perhaps better flow than stock. It really is a mixed bag and some people claim cones in a 944 will cost you a couple hp even when you are rolling fast.

I totally agree with previous post that says unless you are moving, the air temperature is considerably higher. I installed a thermocouple last summer and measured this. Air temperature near water reservoir is nearly ambient. But when you stop, it rises dramatically and quickly.

yeah, thats what i noticed..

take off is lagging, but freeway speeds feel quicker. it also gets alot hotter at idle but stays MUCH cooler at moving speeds.

So on that note, why does my cone setup get hotter at highway speeds and VERY cold around town? Mine sits over top of the radiator area.

i put an autothority chip in my n/a and it seemed faster but the k&n cone made a definate improvement(seat of the pants dyno http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif. one without the other seems to feel more sluggish(i stick the original computer back in when i cant figure out a problem)-they're right about the hot air thing-at slow speeds in hot weather you seem to lose torque. ive been to lazy to build a cold air box but i bet it would help some.
