So I changed the headgaskets and cam tower gasket.......went great.
The only obstacles....was a seized bolt on the Head ...(where I had an external coolant leak it got into the bolt and rusted the crap out of it).... It rusted the bolt, so instead of trying to force it I cut the bolt off (to pull the head)... Added tons and tons of rust eating liquid....grabbed it with vise grips...and added heat to the aluminum and wiggled ...slowly... last thing you want to do is snap the bolt flush with the block!!! The nice thing about working on porsches is that ...they really overthink and engineer these engines..... the little things, like using the same bolt throughout the engine! The only thing I don't like is using Allen style bolts.....you have to becarefull. So now its all back together.... and just finishing the front.... I have ordered a new distributor cap/ rotor/ dust shield/ broken bolt / and new aluminum plugs for the cam tower (these have a bad tendancy to strip!!!!)/ QUESTION: I had the waterpump/seals/rollers and belts done about 10,000 miles so I am not changing these ......except the seal on the upper balance shaft...has a little oil aroung it. So I will replace the seal. I have not replaced this before... 1. In the service manual it refers to a tool to push the seal in when installing? Is it necessary? 2. ALso refers to a tool to hold the roller, is it necessary, or can you rig something up. 3. Spark plugs...what kind do you guys use...the shop that did the work ..had Bosch Platinum Plugs in it? Thanks, ALex |

you can push the seal in by hand usually. sometimes a little tap is necessary.make sure to replace o-ring on the back. i use the tool to hold the roller but you may be able to rig something up. if you have a welder it would not be too hard at all. the allen heads are actually pretty smart on an aluminum engine, wouldn't you rather have them strip first? best of luck.

I didn't think I would need a special tool to push a seal in.... thanks for that...I wasn't sure how far and how snug those seals fit...........
regarding the roller....I guess I will weld something together to put in the holes to hold it in place....someone suggested to use Vise grips on it to hold it ...but that made me a little sick thinking of scratching up the teeth on those rollers. Just got a call....my parts are in..... should have this baby running in no time. Thanks.....for your help. |
