Clutch problem question re: slave or throwout?
 

I have a high milage NA '87 944. I started to notice a rattle when I would engage or disengage the clutch. Very quickly the car became harder to shift. I was very gentle and soon it wouldn't go into gear at all when at a standing stop. I was able to restart the car in gear and slowly get home. The car did shift from 2nd to 3rd to 4th on the fly and the clutch grabbed fine. I'm wondering could my slave cylinder or throwout bearing have failed? Clutch pedal pressure seems about normal.

i would guess that you have an old rubber center clutch and you are currently in 'limp home mode' cause the disc went.... newer ones have a spring center

I was hoping that was not the case. When the clutches went on my 914 and '86 NA 944 I could put them into gear but nothing would happen at all when clutch was relased. So I'm perplexed, any other possibilities?

when my slave went, all that happened is the clutch pedal would get stuck all the way down, i'd have to lift it up with my toe. There is a pic of one of the rubber centered clutches that had failed in a post from just a short while back. The pic shows the metal 'clips' that are what allows it to have a 'limp home' mode.

Sounds like the rubber's gone to me too. Don't let them replace it with another rubber one though.

Thanks for all the super quick replies. Is there any way I can just replace the clutch disc itself? The car has 160,000 miles and I only drive a few thousand miles a year. I'll probably only have it another year at the most, hate to drop $1200 or so for such a small amount of use.

Check the prices for the parts carefully. Unless you do the work yourself, the real cost is the labour. So trying to save a few dollars on parts might not be the best decision.

Get a buddy. With the car on jack stands, one of you mash the clutch pedal while other looks through inspection hole in bell housing to see if fork moves. If it does either rubber or something in throwout bearing assy is bad.

No move , loosen slave cyl bolts a little to give it some play and then mash clutch. It should tighten cyl against bolt heads if it is good.

If no movement still either slave or master cyl is bad.
