my '87 944na has a (broken) ford A/C clutch.
why in the world does an '87 944na have a ford part on it? the engineering number for the rotor is FOCH-19d786-AA and for the pulley its FOCH-19D784-BA does anyone know how to convert that to a partn number so i can order a new one? |

The catalog that I have list the same compressor for 1985.5 944's thru 1992 968's and the same compressor clutch for 1985.5-1995's. all nippondenso.... maybe yours has been converted to a better rotary compressor??

nope, its stamped with "DENSO" also, so i think i was mistaken. I think its the OEM.
How do I know if i should replace the whole compressor, or just the clutch? |

mine blows cold for a few minutes before the clutch causes the heater fuse to blow. Since it's blowing cold, the compressor is working. Hopefully you have a similar problem, cause replacing the compressor leaves you at the will of the shop that gets to evacuate and recharge (i've found alot of rip off artists doing that)

I suspect you have the same problem as I. The coil wires in the clutch have a very thin layer of insulation on them. Heat has ruined the insulation and the thing is shunting the full length of the coil wire because there is contact somewhere down in the coil. Because the path is shorter, there is less resistance. Therefore it will blow fuses. And because there is more current, there is more heat buildup further melting away the coil wire insulation. Mine drew more and more current over about a year. Now it blows the fuse (10A) in a minute or so. I'm getting another clutch.

what about the overheating compressor problem? that can melt the insulation too, right?
