how much to replace the clutch
 

My mechanic is charging me $1500 for parts and labor to replace a new factory clutch set. Is this a reasonable price?

I think you are paying way too much for parts, try to get the mechanic to match parts prices for one of the clutch kits listed in "excellence" Also, if you can, go for a spring center type clutch vs the factory rubber unit. More reliabale, able to handle future HP upgrades etc...

I got a Sachs center spring clutch installed in my 951 and it was 1600+. I didn't really check around. But I trust the shop that did it very much.

Trust in a mechanic is an invaluable thing. Especially when you consider how a much a clutch service and the documentation regarding that service effects the resale value of the car. Reputable shop, good value, good piece of mind down the road.

mine was done a year ago for 1100 w/ spring centered clutch, they tried to get more outta me when I went to pick it up, but i stuck to my guns and prevailed

1500 is not that bad I have seen posts here from a 1000 to 2000, seems to have something to do with where you live. But shop it around! You can always do it yourself for betwenn $350 and $500 depending on the parts you need.

$600 for me.

My '90 S2 cab cost $1500, so far it has outlasted the original by 20k miles. It was done in Seattle by a porsche garage that charges $65/hour, compared to $80/hour by the dealer. I don't remember, but I think they used OEM parts.

You can get a sachs spring center disk,pressure plate and through out bearing for about 450.00 on e-bay, $750.00 from a parts house. I did the job myself in about 14 hours first try. Now that I've done it, it would take about 8 hours. I think thats what a shop charges is about 8 hours. Get the spring center clutch.....

Go with the Pelican if you can. Like the above post said it the best! I ordered the Vertex kit first, but the disc was a resurfaced disc and I did not want to take the risk. If you have any mechanical ability do it yourself. It's time consuming, but not difficult. Get some good work space, and a good hydraulic jack (for getting the tranny back in.) And most of all have fun doing it! I was against doing it at first, but members of this board talked me into it. And now I am glad I did. I now have a much better understanding of the entire vehicle.

$900 but i made the mistake of still going with that stupid rubber center...son of a ***** is gonna blow up on me again in probably another 40,000 miles...

Don't be so worried about the rubber center clutch. My car has almost 150K, and i'm pretty sure it still has the original rubber center clutch. It hasn't failed me yet. I drive it hard, and autocross it, but i don't beat on it.

But it's worn out, I have to change it this winter. After reading Scott R's post, i think i'm going to try it myself. I usually do everything myself, but i thought the clutch would be too much of a pain in the ass. I was going to have someone do it, but i've changed my mind.
