Post Chip Installation??

The instructions with my chip ('86 951)says remove the DME from the passenger floor board. My Haynes manual says the DME is under the dash to the left of the stearing wheel but that may be 85 and older cars. If it is in the passenger floorboard how do you get it out????

On my 86NA it was under the carpet on the passenger side. I think it took 30 minutes to swap out.

On 85.5+ cars, the DME is under the passenger footwell carpet behind a wooden panel. After you remove the wood panel, the DME and KLR boxes are bolted to the back of the metal crossmember. The only way I could get them out was to remove the whole crossmember, then unbolt them from it.

I'd be really interested to find out how you get the chip in. My 86 951 supposedly had the Weltmeister chips installed before I bought it, so I took out the boxes out of curiosity to see if they're really in there. I could see that the metal tabs holding the cover on the box had been pried up, so someone definitely was in there.

I can't for the life of me, though, figure out how they got the chip in once the electronic boards are exposed because there are two boards stacked on each other. The componant sides are facing each other so you can only see the solder points. Somehow, you have to pry one of the boards up to get at the chip socket and I can't see how you would do that without destroying it.

Good luck!

scottewid is right. You have to be careful. I chipped my 86 951. Before you do anything, go down to Radioshack and spen $2 to get a ground strap. This attaches to your wrist and to the metal in the engine bay. This is so any static electricity you generate from moving around is grounded so you don't fry the dme. This is typically worn by people who build computers for the same reason. One end of the circuit board is attached to the other. I don't remember how it it is attached, but is is hinged so that it opens like a book. You have to pry one side of the two circuit boards. I recall one side had plastic pegs that went into recesses on the other board. These are what you need to carefully pry apart.

takes an entire minute to do...

there are only two pegs and they are on the back of the ECU and hold the rear of the boards together

pry the plastic pegs one by one while slightly lifting that corner of the board

once pegs are seperated, pull the top board back and up at the same time

the circuit boards will then look like an open book and the chips will be accesible

The KLR is a little trickier. There is a retainer pin also holding the boards to the base, don't forget to remove it.

I only got the DME chip for the 951 from Europroducts. I want just a tad more power and don't want more boost. Is the DME under the passenger foot or on the side?

All 951s and 85.5+ 944s have the DME/KLR in the passenger side footwell against the firewall. On mine, you just grab the top of the carpet under the glove box and pull it back from the wood cover. The carpet is just tacked on by an adhesive strip and pulls right off, then four phillips screws hold the wood cover up.

By the way, is it just me, or is it really weird that they used a piece of WOOD??!!

IMHO, it looks so out of place in such a technologically advanced car!
