85 MPH Speedo?

I'm looking for a 944 for my 18 yr old son. The one that seems to have the best records, runs best and looks best is a 1983. The speedometer only goes to 85 mph. Any ideas about that? I thought they went to 160...

For a 16 year old, i would think the shorter speedo would be a good thing. I'm only 19, so I can't say too much about those 'damn teenagers.'

From what I understand, an 85-mph speedometer was a erquirement on late 70's/early 80's cars. I don't know whether it applied to all makes and models or not. I also don't know the exact years the restriction was in place. I've never seen a 944 with a 85-mph speedo, so the guage could be from a 924.

i believe that the very first cars, manufactured in 1982, had the 85mph speedo. If I remember correctly, the cars tested by Car and Driver and Road & Track both had 85mph speedometers. They changed this rather early; I have a May 1983 build date, and my speedo goes up to 160.

Yeah, that 85 mph speedo is a result of the two old oil shortages in the 70's and the reduction of maximum speed limit to 55 mph on roads in the USA. 85 mph was a Federal regulation that went into effect about '79 or 80. So having a car likely built in '82 it should be expected.

If your son wants a higher reading one I'm not sure what you would need to do. That is cable driven so there must have been some arrangement made so you wouldn't peg out the speedo too bad.

I bet if you really wanted to, you could just swap to a later speedo.
I doubt Porsche would make all the parts related to it different, that would be unnecessary work on their end.

...You can't be doing faster than what the speedo reads, right?

Still gave me a ticket. I pleaded not guilty then postponed the trial two times. He didn't show on the second. Case dismissed. Got my $142 back. This was 1979.

I had an 85 MPH speedo in my car when I got it, It also has a 944 part number as did my non working Tach. I replaced them both with later model devices. The Speedo works just fine. My tach has a short
