Post I'm so deparate to find a 944 turbo

I'm so deparate to find a 944 turbo. I have $6500 cash to spend. I dont care about mileage. I just want a car that looks good. There is a nice shiny black 928 in town for $6000. I have been looking for a nice 951 for 9 months now. I'm so desparate I might just take the black 928. It isnt even a stick. Please advise me or talk me out of the 928. Anyone want $6500 cash?

Don't buy an automatic! 928's are really nice, but an auto is a mistake I think. Some like them for daily drivers, I personally don't mind driving a stick in traffic. Anyway, try looking at autotrader.com. Do a real wide search and you might find something in that price range not too far away. Worse case scenario, take a bus to it and buy and bring it home.

I only plan on driving this car once a week. It wont be a daily driver. I just want a hot looking side car that is fun. I hate automatics. That shows how desparate I am.

I'll say it one more time, though nobody takes me seriously:

The 86 Jetta GLI I owned was one of THE best all around cars I can imagine for somebody in my position, let me explain:

I was around 17 at the time, building up points on my insurance/license. I kept spending money upgrading the 944, for which paying for insurance got harder and harder (but I didn't want to sign the car over to my parents to lower the insurance). Then came a point when I realized I didn't care for the looks all that much, but rather how much fun I had while driving. I don't have to necessarily go really fast to have fun, just push the car to it's limits is how I had fun (mostly holds true even today). Well, along came this nice little Jetta, bought it for a couple of $100, drove the living crap out of it, jumped curbs, speedbumps, took it offroading, etc. etc. Minor stuff did break (oil pan, fuel lines coming loose off the tank, timing belt slipped, alternator, coil), but since I worked as a mechanic (and had many extra vw parts at the time) it really didn't cost me anything but gas in money.

It was one of the most fun to drive cars I've been in, although it was front wheel drive, with descent tires (back when I worked at goodyear, tires were no problem) up front, it handled quite nuturally, keep in mind it had the sport susp. and lsd up front, as well as good pads and fluid, as well as shocks (again free courtesy of goodyear). I'd drive it as hard as I please, nobody would give me a second look. I can't remember the # of times I peeled out next to cops, never got noticed. In the 944, slight wheelspin anywhere around a traffic cop gets at least an appearance in court, for certain... Car came to it's end after somebody put yogurt into the oil at school (let a friend barrow it, who parked it in somebody elses spot), however I was offered over $1600 for it (if I remember correctly) so I kinda had to let it go!

How does this relate to your story? Umm, don't buy an auto 928! If this is a once a week car, I don't see why you're in such a hurry to go pimping...
Ahmet

Don't get desperate. For $6500 you're not going to find a 951 in very good condition. It may seem like a good deal at the time, but you'll end up paying for it in the end, and the car will spend more time in the shop than on the road (ask me how I know). Just calm down and keep saving your money until you have about $10k to spend on a 951 in good condition. Take your time and wait for the right one, otherwise you'll regret buying a cheap one later on.

You say the 928 auto is slow but are the 928 manual, 5.0 Liter V8 fast thinkin' about saving up for that or a 951? Can't decide?

I drove a 928 auto and it wasn't slow, it moved out pretty damn fast. Now the 5 speed might be faster, but the 928 auto was faster and quicker than my 84 944na 5 speed (with out a doubt).

All the 928's with 32 valve engines are very fast, that's from 1985 on... the 8 valvers were the slower ones here in the US, not so in Europe. The first version of the 32 valve engine was released here in the US in 1985 at 288 HP. If you like air conditioning, that car has a problem. They put a/c lines too close to the exhaust on the passenger side fender, and a metal to rubber joint there eventually goes bad, all 1985 928S's with the 32 valve engine have this problem. The only way to fix it is to pull the engine and repair and modify that connection so that it's no longer under the exhaust. The 928S4's don't have that problem and they have 317 HP 0-60 is around that of the 944 Turbo S at 5 sec flat, around 5.5 sec for the automatic. Top end on the auto is in the 160 range.

Have you done any research, or were you just saving $$ for the past 9 months. Get some books, read, get Excellence magazine, and go look at cars. Test drive as many as you can. Also: make sure you get a pre-purchase inspection done. In your price range, you can either get a decent car, or a real money pit.

Most important: be educated in the car you want to get: the more you know, the less likely you'll get stuck with junk. Don't let your despiration show when buying a car: that will easily tack up the price. Don't buy the car on the spot, regardless of how many "other people" are ready to buy the car. If someone else buys it, don't fret: there are enough 944T's out there in decent shape...

Maintenance records are important: find out as much about the history of the car as possible. Make sure timing belt, h2o pump, belts...etc have been regularly maintained. In the long run, you're better off paying more up front for a car that's well maintained than pay less for a junk that you have to sink serious money into.

Oh yeah, did I mention do lots of research!!!
(I researched Porsches in general for about 4 years! and 944's for a good year before finding my gem of a 944S2!)

Just my $0.42.

z thanks for the advice. to answer your question I have done 9 months of research. I'm not a push over buyer by anymeans. I have seen and walked away 7 951's. Still just trying to find one whoe paint looks good and needs les than $2000 in repairs. I had some bad timing on a couple that had deposits before I could get there. I posted an ad on rennlist also. I'm determined.

Cool. Glad to see you're taking the right steps in getting your car. (And I hope I didn't insult you with my previous post).
Keep us up-to-date with your hunt!

Hi,

It is ALWAYS a mistake to buy any car especially a Porsche "quickly".

There's no such thing as a "cheap" car.
There is def. no such thing as a cheap Porsche.

Regardless wether it's only a weeked or summer car.

Any "savings" you make will only be ploughed back into the damn thing.

Stay away from Automatic's, looses power and very thirsty

Oh yeah,

Listen to Z-MAN, definitly good advice.

It took me a year to buy mine, and saw a lot of dog's on the way.

Started off with £2000 (about $4000) ended up paying £10,000 (about $20,000) for an S2 CAB
