bad heater behavior

I seem to have the opposite heater problem from what I've read.

My heater works great as long as I am stopped or moving at low speeds - like driving around town.

But, on the open road, above 45-50 mph, the heat quickly moves to cool and the gauge moves to the bottom side of the low range.

This also has a effect on the defroster's ability to keep snow and ice clear on the windshield.

Sounds like a thermostat that's getting stuck open, or improperly installed (or missing, or whatever, in short a thermostat problem). You could have a timing belt that's too loose, or a waterpump that's on it's way out as well as a low temp or defective thermostat, but that's less likely.

Just had timing belt, water pump, radiator and thermostat replace about 8 months ago. Thermostats can go bad, but it seems to work fine when moving around town. In fact if you idle for 3-5 minutes, you get too hot. It seems that as cold (it's been under 25 for about a month) air blows past the radiator, the temp drops. As soon as you slow down to 30-35 it warms right back up.

Thermostat. Stuck or missing. These cars were designed by Germans who have cold winters.

Then your heater valve may not be opening completely if the cable sheath to it is loose at either end.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Well, I would fix it myself.

After being a mechanic to work my way through some college I don't trust most of them.

Guess it might be better at a mechanic that is familiar with the cars.

Possibly cheaper than heating the garage.

Been raining here. Reall cold. Low 50's.

Thermostat! Exact same problem happened with my BMW. Thermostat cured it in 20 minutes. Of course it takes a little longer to get to the thermostat on a 944...

On a smug note: I haven't used my heater in 16 months, thanks to Uncle Sam. Military service in the tropics, not to bad.

Hah!

My dad was on his way to the invasion of Japan. The war ended when he was in Hawaii for training.

An officer was going over the personal files and found he could fix radios. He had him come to the back of a jeep and threw back a tarp. There was a five tube receiver just beat to heck. Asked him if he could fix it. Dad said possibly after he straightens it out.

So for the next 18 month he fixed and few radio controlled target drones and partied with the officers daughters on the beach! Didn't have a 944 but then who would care!

We're in a heat wave, got up to 28 this morning and I had so much heat I had to turn the heat fan control down - 1st time in a month. It seems that somewhere around 20 degrees or so is where it either has heat or doesn't...
