Door Speakers

I know the door speakers are very shallow, and in reading the posts, it seems difficult to find a replacement...are the rear speakers (4 speaker sysem) the same speakers as what is used in the door?

Capndar, I answered your post on rennlist, but I'll repeat it here.
They are the same size as the door speakers, but you have much more room behind them.

Thanks to you both ....I had serached and read Clark's bit...perhaps I am thick, but let me ask differently - as supplied by Porsche - are the speakers themselves the same...can I use the rears are replacements for a broken front and then upgrade the rears where there is much more clearance?

go to www.crutchfield.com and get a set of replacement blaupunkt speakers. Put in your car's model and year, they got all the front speaker replacements.

I had a set which also had spacer plates, sold them with my MP3 player stereo to a guy from these boards.

The fronts are 4x6, no separate tweeter (uses a 'whizzer cone'). Rears are coax (separate woofer + tweeter) and are also 4x6, they should be the same fit.

You COULD move the backs to the front. BUT, those are ancient speakers. Old technology, and they are as old as the car. If you take out the broken fronts, even a $40 replacement pair of 4x6s for the front will be FAR superior to moving your old back speaks to the front.

Here's a set that fits for $40:

http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S-zRsEZSj8mwk/ProdView.asp?s=0&c=10&g=51400&I=023PCXT462&o=m&a=1&cc=01&avf=Y

I seriously wouldn't re-use the rears. New speakers, even relatively inexpensive ones, will make a huge difference for you. Blaupunkt is also the OEM speaker supplier, so if you wantto be a purist its the right choice.

Sidebar- my original speaks were stamped "Made in West Germany". It was like a history lesson.

I went through their automated process, and Crutchfield.com says >>Sorry, none of the items in 4x6m Car Speakers fit your vehicle.
However, we may be able to offer other options.
Go to Your Vehicle Page to see the products that fit your vehicle.
Call a Crutchfield expert at 1-888-955-6000 and we’ll be glad to help.<<

hmmmm.... perhaps unscrew your front speaks and check them out (it is very easy to get them out). It could just be a glitch on their site. Furthermore, if you ordered the speaks from crutchfield and they didn't fit, at least through them you can return it free within 30 days. I've returned items to crutchfield, that's what they're good for (there are cheaper retailers out there).

That is an good point...while we are on speakers....why do some replace the stock oval speaker with a 4.5 round?

A few reasons:

1) The reason why your home speakers are round is that round is the strongest shape, resisting distortion the most. This means the more you turn it up, the better off you are with round speakers.

2) Most likely the 4 inch rounds you are referring to are part of 'plate speakers', which have a separated woofer and tweeter. Separates have better sound as well.

If you are going to have a simple setup, with the in-dash receiver's built-in amplifier powering the speakers, honestly I would go with 4x6s. The extra money you might spend on plates would probably not come to light with a basic setup. Someday I should post the details of my stereo setup. I did some interesting things and found some interesting shortcuts.
