a little looseness in the steering?

It seems that lately, my steering has had a little bit of play in it, specifically, it feels like you can turn about an inch in either direction before actually turning the car. once the car is mid-turn, however, the steering feels the same as it always does. at first i attributed this to ice/snow/water on the road or the tires, but now i'm not so sure.

any thoughts?

U-joints in the steering link. Could also be loose at one of the connectors if you had the steering rack off recently.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Ball joints, A-arm and/or sway bar bushings, wheel bearings, and tire wall flex could all be culprates.

I've been givng this a lot of thought recently. I'm gonna rebuild my front end soon and address all these components along with shocks and a pair of new a-arms.
