Post New Car

Ok, well in the future (in a few months) i'm planning on selling my VW and my 951. I was wanting a nicer used car (or cheap new) for at most 12-13k. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions. I am NOT looking for another porsche at this time. I love them but i need something practical and realiable. I would love a used BMW or Lexus (yeah right for that price). But wondering if you guys knew of any cars that are not know about or i can find good used that are semi nice (and a little fast) that would hold me over for 12-13k at most. Thanks you guys!

Well...first you should tell us why you are ridding yourself of these cars. Your VW seems like it would fit your needs perfectly if you are looking for zippy reliable practical transportation. What are your needs?

But, anyways... a 91' NSX can be had for your range if you look hard enough. Reliable, yes...practical, no, and they scoot. E36 M3 is havable at that price with lots of miles, and is a practical one too, but reliable, that remains to be seen. E36 328is is another option. 93.5'+ Supra n/a can be had for that price, and they are good and reliable. Mid 90's Mercedes E class? Civic Si? Integra GSR? What kind of car are you looking for?

Well i'm getting rid of the cars because i moved to college and my parents aren't rich. I pay all my bills/rent on part time job. (A good one but part time non the less). I can't afford the VW (i love the car..just not the $411 a month payments) and i love my Porsche (with its 260 a month payments) but my porsche is just trouble for me with no garage or money to take care of it like i should. I'm looking for something nice (not an NSX). THose BMWs and merc. sounded good. I'm looking for something nice and comfortable. Stylish and realiable for less than an arm and a leg. I'd love to get the new Lexus SC430 lol. But oh well. Until later. When i get enough money and can afford a 951...it'll be something I will definatly have again. My 951 will be up for sale after i find someone to buy my VW (up for sale now)

Why don't you buy a fun, reliable beater (like an AE86 hatch-back corrola...mid 80's rear wheel drive, 125 HP, light as hell, fun) for $2000 and keep your 951? Thats what I am going to do once I sell my all-trac.

I have a 1995 volvo 850 turbo for sale. Red exterior with Gun metal gray leather. The car is in great shape with only 64,000 miles. I have had it for two years and it has had its regular oil changes every three thousand miles with mobile One synthetic. Just put on new brakes, and it will need new tires after this winter. I am asking 13,500.00, it blue books for around 15,000.00. My wife wants a new car so I need to get rid of it.

Why I am selling it...simple economics. I moved out of my parents house close to a year a go, got a decent paying job, and bought that car to commute to work with, all though I had issues with the place I bought it from and it sat for 3 months...but now, I decided the real world isn't for me just yet, so I went back to college, and my parents are floating the bill, but I still owe a lot of money for the loan on that car, and my parents don't want to pay for the car and they don't want me to keep it, so there.

Its a 1990 (the newer all-trac), 107K, good condition out, excellent interior condition, mechanically excellent...just needs new front brakes in the near future. It has a rebuilt turbo that was put on it 2K miles ago, a new PS rack, new motor mounts, a bunch of new stuff I don't recall right now. If your interested or know somebody who is, e-mail me... richietommy@hotmail.com. I would be looking to get a bit over $6,000 for it so I can pay off my loan.

Look them up in autotrader. I went with a friend to look at a $13,000 NSX, and the body and interior were perfect, and it ran perfect, but it had 130000 miles on it. He would have bought it if he had any money.

I concur with the BMW E36. I love my '94 325i I bought it for $13,500 with 82K on it a couple of months ago. No problems yet. It's still a performance car, but luxurious as well. You could get a 318 or 325 for what you want to pay. I searched for 3 months to find what i wanted: a 4-door, manual transmission. Alot of 2-door cars have manual transmissions, but most 4-doors have automatics.

here's a good BBS for E36's

i second that reply on the 86 corolla (AE86) really fun car to drive, VERY loyal following, a beauty on twisty roads to drift with, VERY fast and underated. Relatively problem free (its a Toyota!) and EASILY modible. Drop in a turbo, sc, whatever you want! Cheap, and did i mention its underated? Lemme mention it again, its VERY UNDERATED!! The looks aren't exactly too desirable though.....actually, i think its close to BUTT UGLY. Otherwise, that was the budget I was looking at before, i wanted a 91+ 300zx or a 92+ 2dr acura legend. But since I'm still living at home, and plan to go to college close to home where i can drive my car on the weekends, I'm still going for a 944. Have fun looking, your budget can afford a BUNCH of nice cars.

Hey Ribs,

Stock vs Stock, is your 951 that much faster than your GT-Four?
· Standing start accelerations
· Rolling start accelerations over 60 mph
· Handling
· Braking
· ...?

They're rated at 217 hp vs 200 hp, I was just curious...
Thanks!

Yan...I have never driven in a stock 951, but have ridden in one (mike buck's from this BBS). Mine came with chips, but I can tell you this...

the GT-4 (all-trac) will slaughter most cars to 20 MPH or so. If you don't mind a bit of clutch abuse, you can get verry consistant starts every time, and the motor has a lot more low end (before the turbo hits) and a lot less turbo lag than my 951 motor, so 1st gear is much much quicker and easier to repeat. After that, its all over. The all-trac (which is bone stock) looses its gusto compared to the 951, all though it is quite zippy. V8 grand cherokees are supposedly faster to 60 (7.2 seconds vs. 7.5, according to toyota, all though many publications have gotten 6.7-7.0 second 0-60 runs with these cars). It feels like it has a very flat HP band after 5000 RPMs all the way to 7000 RPMs (red line) as opposed to my 951 which seems to pull harder and harder to red line. The all-trac will give you a little whiplash off the line, but the 951 will give you a bruised medula oblongada once the turbo hits.

For a rolling start over 60, the all-trac might as well be racing a viper...all though the motor is capable of supporting viper-like levels of HP fairly reliably (In the japanese GT racing league, what ever it is called, toyota's factory supra doesn't use an I6, but the very same block from the all-trac, the I4 3S-GTE, but with a built bottom and top end, a big ass turbo, and magnitudes more fuel than my all-trac uses). It is an impressive motor...16 valves, 2.0 Liters, variable length intake runners (which is what gives it a lot more low end grunt than my 951), electronic boost control, etc. etc. A stock internally 3S-GTE motor is probably more capable than a stock internally 951 motor, from what I have heard and read.

Handling...hmmm...toughy...it really depends on the situation. I know I can drive my 951 through the twisties faster in the dry, but I can drive my all-trac a lot faster in the wet with a lot more confidence. Stock for stock (before I got my wider stickier tires on my 951 which would change things around a bit) they have about the same contact patch...205/55 16 and 225/50 16 for the 951, 215/50 16 all around for the all-trac. The all-trac weighs in about 400 pounds heavier than the 951, so I think those tires are inadequate, so something like 235 or 245/40 17's would do perfectly for that car. That said, stock for stock, you can hit a turn quicker in the 951 without having to worry about understeer, while the all-trac will plow (understeer) with much more ease. In dry (and most wet) situations, it drives like a front wheel drive...probably has something to do with the frontward weight distribution.

In the snow and the ice, the all-trac would have gone 100 miles before the 951 was able to get out of its parking spot.

Braking...the all-trac has ABS, but smaller and shettier brakes, but the 951 has older, larger, non ABS brakes that I am...well...was accustomed to before they needed replacing, but in feel, the ABS is way too intervening on the all-trac, so I think I could stop faster in the 951, in a straight line, but, around a corner, in stupid or emergency braking, I would feel much safer in the all-trac.

135 hp, 140 ft/lb torque. 0-60...slow...1/4 mile...slower. The only celica ever made with balls was the all-trac.

Not too long ago, I remember seeing ads for the 6 cylinder version of the E34 BMW M5 for $10K.

a ratty e34 m5 can probobly be had for 13-14k, but it'll be REALLY ratty. I am only aware of a 6 cylinder, I dont think they ever produced an 8. But if one was in your price range, it would be a great car
