Porsche Crest Tux loves his 944

I just finished this up... I used Sodipodi and Gimp to make it. I'm going for a playful type of cartoony look. It's not perfect, but it's kindof cool so far.

Dude, that's badass! Can I get some info about it out of you?
I built one of those back in the day, but I ran it blind from a keypad and it (unfortnately) ran a tiny win98 install with winamp... Anyway, I wanna give it another try.

Is your motherboard an AT or ATX, and how do you power it on? Is it tied into the ignition? If so, how do you get it to shut off properly? What power source are you using? Mini-ITX boards have a 12V DC-DC adapter you can use to hook right up to the battery, but I used a 400watt inverter. Not sure what the best way is.

How do you get the sound into your car speakers? My old one was a wee bit lame and used a tape adapter

Also... your LCD... does it hook up to your VGA port or is it an SVideo?

The mobo I will be using is from www.mini-itx.com They're super tiny, and have onboard everything, plus they use almost no power.

oh yeah, and harddrive... does the vibration have as much of an effect as one would think? solid-state storage is maad expensive, so maybe buying a cheap harddrive is the best way.

Hey Kraft. Send me the info on your install as well. I do audio competitions from time to time. Interested in your idea.

Thumbs up

Very nice graphics. Maybe a bit of the steering below Tux might look better.

lol don't butcher it, try to make it smart but please be very carefull with the AC as it may definitely damage your car installation and or electronics, otherwise best choice is mini itx board, more safe in 12V

If you allow i recommand you using WindowMaker as it's weight is only 2 Mb of memory when it runs. As you will see ther's also no need for icons if you run it with Lirc. I let the icons just to have something on the screen, kind of information about things that can be run with the remote.

For the voice synthsesis have a look at the Carnegie Melon University. They made a huge work with the festival project. You could even give a try to the Sphinx project for voice recognition but is it really the good option, not sure. In one noisy ambiance it will fail or even if you push the sound of the player you could never be heard by it
naw, it's just an old toshiba laptop. Hopefully I can use its display as well, but it's a wee bit large to be mounting in the console.

Anyway... what distro are you using? I'm going to go with a tiny redhat 9 install, becuase the later distros have better hardware support.

Do you have the tarballs of the voice software you are using? I'm downloading Sphinx right now, but if what you're using works I'd like to try it.
