passeger side cooling fan never on?

i know there has probobly been something on this before but anyway...my car has a coolant leak so the engine runs hot. The drivers side cooling fan comes on, but the passenger side fan does not, even when the car is running really hot. We are pretty sure it is not the relay, is it 2 stage cooling system, what else could be wrong?

Is this an early 944 (pre 1985.5) or a late 944? If it is early, I may be able to help -

First, fix that leak and make sure your system is purged (see procedure using burp plug above thermostat). Your thermal switch on the radiator tells the drivers side fan to kick on. My understanding is that the passenger side fan kicks on only when the AC is turned on - someone please verify. So you can simply check to see if your passenger side fan is working by clicking on the AC.

Regardless of whether you have an early or late 944, you can test the passenger fan by turning on the A/C. If it does not work, then disconnect the wires to the passenger fan motor - there will be two fan wires running into the fan (I believe they are brown). Use two electrical jumper wires to connect one jumper from one of the fan wires to a ground and use the other jumper wire to connect the other fan wire to the positive terminal of the battery. If the fan starts then you have eliminated the fan motor as the culprit - and it is likely in the fan circuit.

I had a similar problem recently - Driver's side would kick on when the temperature was hot, and when the A/C was turned on - however, it ran at a slow rate rather than fast. The passenger fan would not turn on at all. If you have similar symptons - it is likely the relay. I spent two months trying to fix my 944 and found that my problem was that relays were in the incorrect position due to mistakes in the 1983 owner's manual - also I found that one of my relays needed to be lifted to create a better contact. I did many other tests, so I have other suggestions if necessary - feel free to email me or post here -

3sonfather is correct. That is normal. Turn your A/C on and check the passenger side fan. If it isn't on then start looking for problems.
