Hey gang.
My mint -85 944 (84 dash type) had the speedo odometer fail like most do. Anyone out there ever taken one out of the car? I havent real scoped it out yet so not sure how much of a plain it is. Is there any do's and don'ts?

Thanks

PS: my race car is a dwarf #44. there 5/8 scale vintage body cars, like a legands but less rules mines home built.

44Dwarf,

Not much help here. Have the newer dash and haven't ever taken the cluster out. Just wanted to say hello to a fellow GRM Lister.

I have an 85.5 but i know the earlier dash is in the Haynes manual if that's useful to you and it looks like you just take out the two bolts between the guages and pull the bracket/cover/trim thing off...doesn't appear too hard.

Take the clip off the speedo cable in the left front hub cap, then you can pull the speedo cable out for better access to unscrew it from the speedo. Take the steering wheel off too.

I reach under the dash to the combination gauge on the left, and push it out (from behind). Once that's out use that hole to push out the speedo, but first undo the cable.

PS: You can switch the the tach and the speedo so that the tach is in the middle. May need to rewire a few things but it wasn't too hard for me.

I removed the steering wheel. Then the two screws that hold onto the two plastic pieces that are around the steering column. Then I removed the three screws that hold on the turn signal/wiper stalks. Then I removed the two screws that hold the guage cluster in and then you should be able to pull it out enough to get your hand in the back to unscrew the speedo cable. I've done this several times so if you have anymore guestions just let me know.

Thumbs up

Thanks guys.
So I guess there's screws under thos ruber covers between the gauges. I thought so but wasn't sure. Good thing someone said about the wheel removeal I might fix the wiper arm while i got it apart. My intermidant works but only if theres preasure on the switch arm.

Thanks again.

Actually, the screws are not where you think. They are, hmm, how to explain it... They are under the round part of the part that surrounds the clusters. Feel with your hand on the concave(sp?) part about the actual tach, and gas/ect. guages. Don't try prying at those little things, I did it and I f-ed them up.

Goodluck.

You definately have to remove the steering wheel. Had get behind the cluster on my '84 944 and that was the only way it would come out.

I've replaced my speedo cable twice (long story), swapped the gauges a couple of times too. I didn't need to pull the wheel, but it makes the job easier (had the 4 spoke wheel at the time).

Removing the wheel is the easiest part of the whole job. Why not do it?
