Aaarrgghhh. Now the stupid metal lifter thingees in the back of the sunroof are out of alignment. One is completely retracted, while the other is sticking out a bit. Every now and then I can get them to raise (I'm sure just to spite me). When I turn the car on the sunroof motor runs and gives me the middle finger. Thankfully it's been warm so I haven't had to put the roof back on.
I pulled off the carpet in the trunk behind the driver's side like my mechanic said, but have no idea what to fiddle with to realign the metal lifter thingees (yes, that is a technical term). Clearly marked, yeah right! Can anyone give me a play by play on what to do, in girl language please? I'd rather not make another contribution to my mechanic's retirement fund. Thanks! Marie |

Hi Marie,
See you took my advise from the NG. You'll like it here. Go to The Porsche 944 Garage and click on the "Shop Manual". Follow the page down to the articles on the sunroof R&R. Good luck and welcome to Pelican. Dennis Russell ![]() ------------------ Dennis Russell Indianapolis, IN USA 1987 944 n/a |

More than likely your are fighting the same thing that I was this weekend. On the side that does not always go up. You probably need a plastic sunroof gear for starters. Install that, and then you will need to adjust the micro switches on the cable rail attached to the motor. If you need the steps for that email me. I will copy some service manual pages for you.

Thanks for the info. Any illustration, schematic, crayon drawing, etc. would be helpful in regards to the layout of the mechanism in the trunk, as I am not the most technically inclined. Knowing my luck I'll break something....don't even ask about the first time I took the sunroof off.
Although I did get the gear thingees replaced without teaching the neighborhood kids any new words. ![]() ------------------ Some people are worried about the difference between right and wrong. I'm worried about the difference between wrong and fun. P.J. O'Rourke |

Best of luck with your sunroof- mine was a pain in the ass and eventually I forced it off, which only led to a disasterous blow off at 60 mph because those damn metal lifters weren't holding it down.

If you replaced the gears, you have been to and back from where you have to go to align the sunroof metal lifter thingies.
So... Using the switch, fully extend the sunroof metal thingies (like you were rasing the sunroof while it is still attached to the car) take off the surrounding interior trim pieces. Use an appropriately sized star wrench (a universal screwdriver kit with swappable head pieces will usually have the correct star head) and loosen the metal slider thingies, slide both of them to the same length, retighted, and reassemble. That should be about it. ------------------ ribs, 86' 951 My gallery |
