Help, Transmission area is clicking and wont let me move

Last night i was sitting at a red light, started out went to shift into second at 20 mph and my rear end just locked up. I pushed it off the road, it rolled in neutral. I tried to move it again in first gear and it would move a foot or two and like grab then release, then i went to get it towed then the rear end just locked up and wouldnt let me move it forward but it would let me move backwards without locking up. This morning i took off the CV joints to see if that was the problem and started the car, in neutral the transmission was moving and the clicking was consistant WITH the CV joints disconnected. If anyone could give me any advice onto what is going on that would be great!

Ring and pinion failure probably. You need to do more diagnosis but be prepared to be buying another trans.

I second Bw's thoughts. It's pretty much a waste of time but you could pull the side cover with the tranny still in the car or have some one hold the clutch in and with the car in gear manually turn the input shaft or turn the flanges on the tranny. You'll be able to feel the r+p mesh the whole time or suddenly slip or lock. Best of luck!

FYI: In case you have an early 944 or 924S, I have a good used tranny with the shorter 5th gear, can ship via UPS.

Tranny needed in 3-2-1 oops, too late.

Pop the drain plug and you will see chunky bits.

yep, mine did that, it was the ring and pinion, I just bought a used transmission and put it in, it's really easy to put in on a lift took us maybe 3 hours from start to finish, that is dropping the old one, installing new one, changing fluid, and test driving. I went for one out of an s2 cause I got a great deal and it's supposed to be stronger
