broken bellhousing

well my tranny went out on my 86 951 and i put another one on. in the process i noticed a crack on the rear bellhousing that u bolt the tranny too. I thouht to myself "it will hold for a while" I got the tranny in and hit first and second and when i hit third....clunk.... the whole thing is shattered. what do i have to do to replace the bellhousing. Do i have to replace the whole torque tube or is the bellhousing part replaceable?

No the rear bell-housing is part of the torque tube, so you will need another tube. How did it get cracked in the first place?????

...at first it seems like a pain in the ass..........

but you can drop the entire rear end with 5-6 bolts on either side. Also disconnect the brake lines!!!

It is not as bad as it first seems......

Since you're replacing it, might as well put in an aluminum one that's like 70 lbs lighter...

Taking the torque tube out is not that bad. I recently did a auto to 5-speed conversion, and had to change the tube out. You have to drop the rear suspension assemly. There are like 3 bolts on each side plus the big bolt in front of the rear wheels that runs horz. with the car. Undo the brake lines right above the torsion bar assembly and drop it down. Leave the parking brake attached, you don't have to drop it down that far.
