If the 944 goes, what should I get?
 

I just want a decently fast car if I have to sell this 944. Only car I can see I really like is a Toyota Supra.
My main goal for the new one would be.
1) Not cost so d*mn much to repair.
2) Moderately fast
3) Not so hard to work on...

don't think that the Supra will be much less than a 944. there's parts in a Supra that are so expensive you will not be sure if they're showing you the part number or the price.

honestly... what about a Toyota MR2? if not an MR2, what about a VW GTI with the 1.8 turbo engine. those engines are rock solid bullet proof and you'll run out of money way before you run out of HP. also:

Nissan Skyline (an older one like a 1992 or so)
Alfa Romeo GTV6 (awesome cars!)
Mazda RX-7 (late 1980s one with the 13b engine)

What you can do if you want a FAST car, for some desent money and a fun project....

buy a 240SX, how nice is upto you, you can get em for 3 thousand for the late 80s for in the 10s for the nice late 90s. Put a s13, S14, or S15(expensive, 6sp tranny....real nice)

If you wanna see more on this go to www.srswap.com, they do these converstions for about 6000 for you. These engines dont start out encerdably fast but they are easily modded. The site, srswap.com is my brother's and his friends' site, they do the conversions for you and my bro has a est 350HP 97 240, with the S14 engine. Check it out its defenetly a great car for the money.

I say go with a well maintained RX-7 or supra.....you wont find a nice supra or rx-7 for under 15k..... They are both really nice cars.... And there is always a 951

951...or 87-91 rx-7 turbo (much less trouble and much more reliable than the 3rd gens because the induction system is much simpler) and put the other 12 grand in mods. For 12 grand you could build a street ported motor with 3rd gen housings, big turbo, lots of fuel, nice suspension, big brakes, and a nice set of wheels and tires. You could run 350 HP reliably if you do it right.

MR-2 turbo is an awesome car, too. You can buy my all-trac turbo if you want...only 6 grand http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif. 300Z twin turbo can be had for that price range...It performs almost identically to a 944 turbo S...check out this article comparing the two.

You can buy a 1980's turbo dodge minivan and turn it into acrazy ass minivan.

240 SX with an SR20DET motor swap is a good suggestion too. You won't be able to find a good 4th gen supra for that pricerange, and I think the 3rd gen supras are kind of hokey. You could get a decent 3rd gen rx-7 for that price, but they have a tendancy to require a lot of work, explode motors, and spend a good portion of their time in the shop, unless you simplify the induction system (i.e. single turbo conversion). I don't know much about the 5 cylinder turbo AWD audis from the late 80's/early 90's, but I imagine they can be juiced, are probably in your pricerange, and I think they look cool.

You could get an early 90's miata and get a supercharger for it...those cars handle seriously well, but some people think that they are kind of gay. There is a lot more out there, but that is just what I could think of off the top of my head.

I would suggest .... uhm an

84 Pony Hyundai.

Start of with the 1.5 liter powerplant.

83 HP/120 lbft torque ...stock.... then maybe upgrade it with a Kempower PetrolKits (this is for real)

Stage 1 96 hp 135 lb ft
Stage 2 100 hp 140 lb ft

It would be the envy of all rice racers.... that inline 4 with 2v....and no worries of the timing belt going.... it does have a manual choke.... handles like a grocery cart..... will turn many heads!!!!

Will be tough finding a stock Pony.... most have rusted out by now....

You may be able to get a body kit for it, that will surely help with the aerodynamics.

This puppy topped out at a whopping 90 mph.. I believe.... but I am sure the 0-60 times were kickass.... and the 1/4 mile times maybe a little shy of the 944na....

I would suggest getting the base model... without the optional mud flaps, right side mirror, side mouldings, 13 inch rims (cast iron)..... with a weight loss reduction program this baby will be the envy of the block.... with an MSD ignition I am sure we could probably squeeze another couple of horses....... and maybe slap on a supercharger.... or better yet.... we could drop in the NA powerplant!!!!!!

...on second thought.... City transit maybe a better bet.....

For $50 bucks you can get some roller blades. The parts and maintenece on them is pretty cheap, and fool proof.

I agree with Obin and others about the MR2. I had a 1991 MR2 MKII NA for about 2 years prior to getting my 944S2. I had an n/a, and it was peppy, but not that fast.

Some of my friends in the MR2 club have turbos that are putting out over 300hp: some serious power.

They do handle better than the Supras, they are cheaper to purchase and maintain also. Plus, Supra owners tend to have 'high and mighty' attitudes. But both the Supra and MR2's maintenance is more than the average car, but less than a p-Car.

Personally, I'd go with a 4th gen. Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo. This was 'car of the year' (by Road&Track I think? not sure on that one) a couple of times in the early 90's. Gorgeous car IMHO.

HAHAHA. No...I believe the fox was up on that list back in its day (up until 1993), but as long as it wasn't pink, I didn't care...and besides, girls like a guy who has a sensitive side. I couldn't beat the fox for $1000 when I bought it though, even if it is a little "fruity". Besides, even a VW fox is manly if it has a 4" suspension lift:

Any photos of the Fox with the tree laying on the roof? I forgot you rallied up your Fox--it had what the 4" lift, turboed(or was it SC) powerplant putting out 230 HP, full quattro drivetrain w/manual diffs. I bet it was a screamer.

Yeah...the fox was a hell of a screamer, until the tree fell on it and blew out all of the windows...I wish I took a picture, but all 230 HP of her AWDness is resting in pieces at a junk yard.

The fruit fly's infestation was because two of my roommates are in the school drama club, and you know what they say about guys who like to sing and dance in front of an audiance, so I imagined they followed them back from their play practice (they aren't ghey, BTW, but you can never be 100% sure if they are in the drama club). The fruit flys went away after I attacked them with 2 cans of indoor flying insect killer and removed the rotten cheese from the sink. Life is good without infestations.
