I was looking at getting this

Couple questions,

What are some commen problems I should look for before buying?
Is the engine the same as the 944 turbo? Just minus the turbo part?

Does anyone know the specs on this car? Ive been told 150,160, and 188bhp, Which is correct?

As far as turbos go, can a 944 Turbo be fitted on this fairly easy? I am assuming that since there is a 944 turbo both engines would be the same except for the compression ratios. So I would need to get some forged pistons? And would the rest of the engine handle the stress? Maybe just some transplants from a 944 turbo engine to make thi turbo ready.

Im looking for any information on big boost. I am looking for a car to replace my e30 because I cannot find any good e30s in my area but there are about 5 good 944s here.

Not close to the same engine. Save face and buy a 951 instead. Cost of the car is too high IMHO! Buy it and convert to turbo makes the final sale cost around 12 Grand instead.

The car on the link is a 84 not 87 again many differences. HP on this car is 147.

Problems: Former owners treated it like dirt. Check the PPO's!!! Records!?
TIMING BELT failure is # 1 get the belts done if not known when replaced. Many sellers are selling because they are close to replacing the belt system and can't or don't want to pay the cost to have it done so buyers get stuck with the job and as a result many go too long and CRASH......fail. Clutch life is another failure if not kept or treated nice. Is this car a manual? But to answer the question correctly anything can be a problem if neglected on a Porsche. There are owners who have had to practically rebuild the car back to spec due to poor PO maintanance. So in sum this car could use a lot of cash just to get it to spec if this car has issues!

Unless you can verify that mileage, and even if you do, that's a bit more than what most '84's are going for. Seven grand is, IMHO, about twice what the market is right now. Usually the odometers stop working and the mileage is off. Or that's actually 164,000. But it's definetly NOT an '87.

924Sman hit the rest of it dead on. If you pay what they're asking or even pay 6k for it and then find out you need another $1000 to make it safe from destroying the valves, you may not be too happy.

Take a better look around! I bought my 86 944 for $5500 and it has 107,000 on it And all the maintenance was done WITH records. The car is darn near perfect shape. I bought it 3 months ago.

Thats WAY to high for that car. The dealer probably only has $1500 or so in it.

Just to add to mambo....it is an Automatic. The same car in a manual would run much higher than 4 Grand. Exact car with records and excellent shape in 5 speed will cost close to 6000.00 or more.

So take that under consideration. Sman

Pass on this one and wait for a 944 turbo... they can be found for $6000-$7000.
and the turbo is a diffferent animal, has stronger trans, bigger brakes, the list goes on and on...
and they can be moded to 300HP (or so I have been told)
You could put $6000 into moding a N/A and get maybe 200HP (all conjecture on my part but I have done some reading on the subject)

Oh and if you really want to go drag racing in a Porsche you could pick up a 924 for $500 and drop a Chevy in it (renegade has a kit for that I think). It is a smaller, lighter, more areo car.
Problem being the trans and independent rear suspension is made to handle something thing like 150-200HP max. Snap crackle pop...

I'm not a big fan of the Chevy swap BUT

I think I might stick with a e30 becuse I can drop a 99 m3 in with 240 bhp and still have room to supercharge it, ive seen the engines hit 450+ hp... Unless I find a 944 turbo somewhere or can't find an e30, thats how the search is going now. Thanks for the help guys
