Yes, our 944NAs are faster than a new Porsche!

In EVO and 911& PORSCHE WORLD, they outlined the newest Porsche --- the base Cayenne, with the VW Toureg's 3.2 V6. It produces a shade under 246 hp... pretty good, forgetting that the thing weighs 5000 lbs!

0-60 is 9.2 sec., officially the slowest Porsche since the original 924, which also used a VW engine...

Audi engine. Had to buy the rights back from American Motors (Rambler) to use it. Original upright design was for a tractor.

My '79 VW bus had the flat 4. Two versions were offered, the hot one (90 hp, I think) the sales people called the "Porsche" motor since it was also in the 914 (I never confirmed that). My Dad's '58 bus had the usual bug motor. That pretty much brackets the VW bus line...I'd love to know it they ever did an inline 4 bus.

VW did go to a water cooled upright four in the later bus's. Didn't know it was the same engine as the 924. Thought it was from the Golf.

There was a kit to put a ford four banger in the later air cooled bus's like the 79.

So you're saying the Vanagon ( I never really considered them busses) does have the 924 engine, huh? That vehicle just got a lot more interesting. I don't even know if they moved the engine up front on those.

It's a little sad however the S and Turbo models make up for it.

The baseline Cayenne a new model .. When I first checked them out it seems they only had the turbo model.

The 924 (Audi) engine was used in the VW LT range of trucks.
Think of the LT as a large Vanagon, with the Engine in the front, tranny bolted to the engine and rear wheel drive.

whats the big deal, I don't think anyone in a 944, Cayenne (base) or 924 is worried about getting to 60 quickly.

I don't know which VW van had the 924 engine... I have read many books and mags on the 924 that mention this; the most recent, if memory serves me correctly, being the EVO article about the Cayenne V6 launch. If people are skeptical, I can pull out some old books (Peter Morgan's, et al) and find specific passages...

The 924 engine was never in the Vanagon, it was only ever installed installed in the LT trucks range , which were for Europe/Rest of the world only. The passenger car variant of the engine was also in the Audi 100LS.

That particular LT version went out of producton several years ago, it also used the VW diesel engine as used in the Volvo 700 series vehicles. The current LT is a MB Sprinter in another giuse.

Do you know if the 9.2 second time is with the automatic tranny or the manual? speaking of which the Cayenne is suddenly looking a lot more appealing to me now that a manual transmission is being offered. A manual is also going to be offered with the 340hp engine in the S model. I guess the manual makes the car one notch closer to being a 'real' Porsche in my eyes. Now all of a sudden, i wouldn't mind having a Cayenne V8 manual as a tow vehicle/bad weather vehicle/off-roader when I get older. of course the Pepper would complement whatever Porsche sports car I have in my garage at the moment . At least I'll be staying withing the Porsche family, and get to drive a Porsche a Porsche no matter what the climate or situation.

Okay, enough dreaming...gotta get back to studying for midterm exams. Hopefully if I work my arse off I can be able to live out the thought described earlier .

The 924 2.0 liter was used in the VW transporter van,at least here it was called Transporter. There was an Audi 100 2.0 liter, but Im not sure it was the same engine.Next Audi 100 engine was a 2.3 5 cylinders.

So new base cayenne has a 3.2 V6 VW engine?I bet its the Golf/Bora VR6 engine,it has the same specifications.

Damn, nowadays they build an engine, and an entire car family is powered by it....look at the 1.8 turbo....TT,golf,polo,bora;almost all Seats and Skodas and a lot of cars Im forgetting wear it...at least our cars have a specific engine!

The original Audi 100LS (in the 70s) used the 924 engine.
The Audi 4/5 cylinder engines were based on the Golf engine.
In most of Europe the Transporter was the Vanagon panel van.
The LT was the next step up in load carrying ability.
